TMS course complete and successful

Posted by Clearskies on October 18, 2018, at 23:01:52

My Transcranial magnetic stimulation treatments ended last week, and I am still feeling well. I think content is how I would describe my current mood, and its a feeling very foreign to me. Im trying to savour it.

The treatment is quite the boondoggle here. A local neurologist has opened his own treatment center, having seen the (lucrative) success TMS is having. From what I have read, it has a 30% success rate, which is really good.

I am very glad I was able to get this.

I'm really glad to hear this. Contentment is a good thing, and you deserve some.

I am impressed. I hope you continue to feel well. Is there a schedule for maintenance treatments?

My doctor brings up TMS from time to time, but I didn't think that it was very effective for TRD people. I guess I should reconsider.

The plan is to wait and see whether I need maintenance at all. Some require it frequently, others only once a year.

Oh, I hope you do. It was introduced specifically for TRD like yours and mine. I am not at 100%, but 56 years of trauma and related existence is a lot for neurotransmitters to overcome. I have yet much work to do myself.

That's great news. Congratulations. How many sessions did you have before you started to feel better? Was your improvement gradual or sudden?

I did a total of 35 45-minute sessions spread over six weeks. After the second week I noticed not a waning of depression but rather an increase in vitality. I still felt my old miserable self, but it became far easier to get through the day. My mood waxed and waned. I spent several sessions in abject tears. I didnt find it tolerable until about 3/4 of the way through, I experienced surface pain on my scalp that hurt like heck. My right arm would flop uncontrollably if the magnetic coil wasnt in exactly the sweet spot.

The last week of treatment, my mood had begun to lighten to meet my newfound ability to function, and my depression began to ease. Im on my meds as I was before, having stopped just Prazosin. The treatment did not address anxiety - that would be the other side of the brain.

I cautiously consider this to be a success.
