I would rather be working.
Which is, of course, precisely why I'm not.

Why you talking about Christmas?

Did someone else bring it up, or did you just start thinking about it?

What do you usually do?

For the record, I held it together on Christmas Day. Mostly. I didn't help clean up after the pancake breakfast (played a big part of the `many hands make light work - you did a great job of cooking for us all morning now it's time for you to sit back and put your feet up' drive the year before). But I couldn't face that last time. And I do feel bad. Because he looked disappointed. He was so happy (unbelieving, really) the year before.

But the next day I fell apart. And my friend simply doesn't understand that being around her is energy draining and being by myself is relaxing for me. She just really cannot accept that, at all. And I wasn't staying in a hotel where I could just go back there. And they don't respect doors being closed in their house. So...

What do you usually do?

If you really do want to spend it alone, I'm a bit of a master at that.

But... YOu aren't really going to - are you? You are feeling upset about family demands lately, though, I do hear you on that.

How are the birthday plans going?

Well if you work they will take your taxes, so they should be interested to get you working.

they take taxes either way. in fact, i think the more you earn, the less tax you pay. pretty sure that is true in these parts. because you set up a trust fund for yourself, you see. or a charity. if you set up a charity then you will get tax breaks on a bunch of stuff. car. home office. all kinds of bells and whistles for your home office. and so on. if they had to pay me minimum wage they would be paying more more than i get now. pretty sure. so, that's actually a loss for them.

Thats not the case in Germany at all. The more you earn the larger the percentage that is taken away. Up to 50%.

ah. here, the more you earn the more you are able to start up a charitable trust for yourself as the primary beneficiary / recipient. you need to pay a sum, maybe even a little more in lawyers fees, and you need to put a certain amount into it from the get go.

then i think it is some kind of tax haven. you put your money into that.

then your charitable trust will require things... it will require a home office and a computer and a phone and a car and so on... and all of that then doesn't count as your assets and you don't pay tax on any of it. it's like a charity for you - or similar.

we don't have capital gains tax here. i don't really know what that is. i think it is something about if you buy a property that is valued at $500,000 and 6 months later it is valued at $750,000 then you don't pay tax on the gain in capital you now have. or similar. i don't know.

i didn't keep on with law...

but rich people don't pay tax. tax is what poor people pay. i don't think our politicians pay tax, even. there is some declaration thing they are supposed to do since 2008 or similar of what money they get and what trusts they manage and / or are named beneficiaries of and the like.

that's where i saw that a number had foreign superannuation schemes.
a number had charitable trusts.
a number had things like... season pass to whatever racing club
sports tickets...

stuff like that.

one named his car as an asset worth... don't remember how much.

it matters. what they spend their money on.

i don't care if someone is a millionare if they have an eye to investing in things that are good for us all. clearly our government is mostly incompetent.

and i don't begrudge people having nice things. if he was really into that car (and made sacrifies in other respects) and he brought it new and he's still gonna be riding around in it when it's vintage, or similar... then i dont begrudge...

but then if you learn that the people in his care are expected to... well... yeah.

I am being slightly facecious.

The idea is to reward people for investing their money in things that will help communities -- becuase the government doesn't really have a clue how to spend tax money wisely.

The idea is that some people make better decisions than the government about where money should go.

So it's a provision for people to do that. If you think the government organisations aren't funding the right things in this, that, or the other respect then you could donate to whatever charity to provide those services.

I'm being facecious because people have managed to... Misuse... Those funds every bit as badly as the government does.

But that doesn't mean the potential for a good use of it isn't there.

I haven't started dreading christmas yet. But I will do, soon. It's on my list. I try and wait until more around thanksgiving for that.

Thats not the case in Germany. Blue collar pays too much taxes, but certainly not more then rich people. I am not entirely sure but i think that average working people pay about 20% and the rich people pay 50% of their income.

You are not the only one. People need all the drink to put up with it with some grace.

Also it must be more fun in the cold. Drinking in the cold is way better than in the heat.

I don't want to hijack Lam's thread but I wanted to say I'm sorry about all my ignorant crap about Economics. I have recently re-descovered Khan Academy. WOW the site has developed HEAPS. There are AP courses and so on... Anyway, I'm working through Economics... The start of the AP Macro was like 'oooooooh' like answering all my most basic of questions right from the very get-go about assumptions and why buy in to those and so on...
