RIP Danny Kirwan

Posted by sigismund on June 13, 2018, at 16:28:24

The most talented member of Fleetwood Mac in my book. Joined around the age of 19 maybe (1969?), was there for the 4 best albums, had a breakdown, left the band, became homeless in London and ended up in a shelter. Died the other day.

I like this, and the endless feel. Gordon Lightfoot had some of that, at least in 'Sundown'. The words are from Rupert Brooke who wrote all that nonsense about England.

Perhaps due to the fugal thing it reminds me of ......

(The last line being one of the saddest I know.)

Death Fugue

Paul Celan, 1920 - 1970

Black milk of morning we drink you at dusktime
we drink you at noontime and dawntime we drink you at night
we drink and drink
we scoop out a grave in the sky where its roomy to lie
Theres a man in this house who cultivates snakes and who writes
who writes when its nightfall nach Deutschland your golden hair Margareta
he writes it and walks from the house and the stars all start flashing he whistles his
dogs to draw near
whistles his Jews to appear starts us scooping a grave out of sand
he commands us to play for the dance

Black milk of morning we drink you at night
we drink you at dawntime and noontime we drink you at dusktime
we drink and drink
Theres a man in this house who cultivates snakes and who writes
who writes when its nightfall nach Deutschland your golden hair Margareta
your ashen hair Shulamite we scoop out a grave in the sky where its roomy to lie
He calls jab it deep in the soil you lot there you other men sing and play
he tugs at the sword in his belt he swings it his eyes are blue
jab your spades deeper you men you other men you others play up again for the dance

Black milk of morning we drink you at night
we drink you at noontime and dawntime we drink you at dusktime
we drink and drink
theres a man in this house your golden hair Margareta
your ashen hair Shulamite he cultivates snakes

He calls play that death thing more sweetly Death is a gang-boss aus Deutschland
he calls scrape that fiddle more darkly then hover like smoke in the air
then scoop out a grave in the clouds where its roomy to lie

Black milk of morning we drink you at night
we drink you at noontime Death is a gang-boss aus Deutschland
we drink you at dusktime and dawntime we drink and drink
Death is a gang-boss aus Deutschland his eye is blue
he shoots you with leaden bullets his aim is true
theres a man in this house your golden hair Margareta
he sets his dogs on our trail he gives us a grave in the sky
he cultivates snakes and he dreams Death is a gang-boss aus Deutschland

your golden hair Margareta
your ashen hair Shulamite

I've never seen his works in person.

I take that back. Once I saw pencil works.

Anthony Bourdain's death saddens me. I don't know if he's popular in AU.

I'd only heard of AB's name, but after his death 2 things he said stayed with me.

Something like 'No one has wanted to be dead more than me'. (O yeah?)

And particularly what he said about the Palestinians.

Like Oscar Wilde said of Robert Ross, men have gone to heaven for less.

He sounded really nice, from what he said.

Danny Kirwan didn't write this. Bob Welch did. For him it was a spinal thing, Lyrica, next thing he hung himself. Well, some things are beyond solution.

What I like with Danny Kirwan is the intense romanticism, a dash of self pity and being so young and intense. Only 20. And the guitar playing, interweaving. From Future Games.

All the music then was designed for acid really.

That brings to mind the Versailles peace conference.

The Japanese had made such great efforts to equal the Europeans. Beaten the Russian, they even sided with the allies. And then they were stuck next to Ecuador! At the big table Clemeceau, Lloyd George, and Billy Hughes (ours!) were talking about n*gg*rs and stuff. Clemenceau said he was stuck in a Japanese city and could not for the life of him find a blond haired woman. What can you say? No taste at all.

So they moved into Manchuria 14 years alter.

Oh man! What a species.

He was a good American. He exemplified the good qualities, I would think, when he was abroad.

He had been a heroin addict and crack cocaine. So maybe there was death wish (for him) in that.

This piece is lovely. Automatically playing now is Woman of 1000 years. Such a feeling I can't express. Melancholy, nostalgia, an older sweetness. The time flies as they say. All of apiece with Simon and Garfunkel (the vocal harmonies).

Btw, Bob Welch hung himself? I can't find results of how Kirwan died.

Idk how Kirwan died. Alcoholism may have played a role. I found this on Bourdain's suicide.

"Despite what were hearing from nearly every media outlet, suicide is not necessarily the result of an untreated mental illness. Suicide can be a rationale act in the face of irrational and impossible circumstances. Were the Buddhist who immolated themselves to protest the insane violence of the Vietnam War suffering from a mental illness?"

My feeling is that we only know life from life, from being alive. Therefore we cannot put a value on it, Once you get to a certain age it hardly matters. What matters is that the young can grow up healthy and as happy as possible.

One is apt to hear at this point something along the lines of 'If only we can save just one life'. This over-flatters us. There are plenty of lives we could better care for. No details necessary.

The albums on which he played are....
Then Play On
Kiln House
Future Games
Bare Trees

but maybe there were more?

Bet you haven't heard a better version of Mission Bell than this?

Jeremy Spencer went to the Children of God. I like some of his compositions too. People took SO much acid.
