My Grandma has severe dementia since a few months.

Posted by Lamdage22 on November 21, 2017, at 11:12:30

Hey guys,

i always visited my grandma when i could (She is 98!!). But the last few months she has declined a lot. She walks around outside of the house in the middle of the night (cold germany!!). They have to lock the door now. She lives below my uncle and aunt and she has somebody take care of her 24/7.

The doctor said that you cant give alot of tranquilizers when somebody has dementia. My uncle is a doctor and he seems to not be a pill lover which i admire.

I just wanna reach out. I love my grandma. Maybe we will see eachother again:) I dont think that we just go to nothing when we die.

Any support, be it medical or other is greatly appreciated. Maybe they should get another opinion. I just dont want her to suffer more than she has to.

I have read articles that say most psych meds are not good for the elderly and especially those with dementia. I'm sorry to hear about your grandma. It's funny. My grandfathers both died when my parents were children. My grandmothers both died when I was in my teens. My parents both died when I was 34. So I find I lack empathy for people whose parents/grandparents are in their 90s and failing.

It's just not something I really relate too. But I understand that she has been important to you and I'm sorry she's doing so poorly.

I don't know what medications your uncle considers tranquilizers, but I agree keeping her comfortable should be utmost. Many people with dementia have under met needs for pain and calmative medications, in part, because they no longer communicate effectively or at least self report symptoms.

A family member suffered terribly with a virulent Parkinson's (strong and rapidly progressing) as his relative hauled him to alternative medicine practioners in effort to stave off pharmaceutical treatment. Finally, when given some basic meds, he felt so much better.

His relative meant well, but she was just too scared to think clearly for awhile. Ailing is not an easy time.

Best to you and your grandmother.

my grandmother developed dementia severely in her older years, she passed away at 87, i started noticing it when i was younger, it was night and i was staying the night at her house, she was laying in the other bed (there were 2 beds in the room) and i just started asking her questions about her life, like the past, who was her best friends, and fun times, she got me confused with her son for a couple minutes, and also she started going back in time, but she always had a loving personality even when dementia took it big toll at the end years.....

but the doctors used Aricept, it didnt really seem to work because her dementia was getting very bad, nothing could of stopped what was happening, only intense brain excersis of memorry recall, and trying to get her to be self-aware at the time

im very sorry to hear....i know how it feels, it happened to me, she lived with us in the house at the very end years
