I might be moving

Posted by Angela2 on October 23, 2013, at 15:42:02

I have to think about it, and so does he, but my friend (and he's only a friend, nothing more) suggested a little while back, that I move into his house and pay rent to live upstairs. I'd probably end up giving him like 300 a month. I feel like this is doable. Plus I've been wanting to move out of my parents for a while. And it will force me to keep a budget for my finances.

We still have to figure some things out. And I am supposed to think about it before acting on it, for like a week. But yeah, kind of excited.

That would be exciting. far from where you are now? And with an old friend? Opportunities are always welcome!

It's close by. But I decided to not move after all, and just save my money!

Aw!

I meant to reply to this thread much sooner...

I was going to say something in support of your moving, actually. For a change. I don't know... I find change stressful, but I think it is an experience... Learn a little something more about myself each time I do it. And it focuses me somehow. Gets me out of the funks that I sometimes find myself in. Has me feeling / being all productive. Feels like a fresh start somehow.

Sounded good in the sense of having a space all to yourself... Not too far from home if things do go badly... Your friend not putting pressure on you (sounded like he was capable of letting you decide what is in your own best interests / he was capable of treating you as an adult).

But... So long as you are happy...

:-)

Hey Alexandra, with the money I save, I want to go to school and move out. In that order.

Yeah, I agree about change. Although I decided not to move, a change was the motive behind it. I feel like I need a change.

I am firmly convinced... That you know what is best for you. Or, at the very least, that you have a better grip on what is best for you than what I do.

What do you want to do at school? I'm going back, too. I'm excited :-)

Well there are a few possibilities. I could go for art or creative writing. or I could go for Spanish. All 3 things I like and am interested in. So I guess I gotta narrow it down. :P

What are you in school for?

I just wanted to post that.
I think because of your comment about me knowing whats best for me, thanks, by the way for saying that. But anyway, yeah I get caught up in "which direction should I go mode," sometimes. I did tonight actually. And reading this article made me feel better. I like to share :)

i'm not entirely sure about school yet.

i have two options: bio-medical science, or health science. the first is... well... there is bio-chemistry and bio-physics. the second is more social science-y. learning about the health system etc. the first has more contact hours and multiple guess exams. the second has less contact hours but more articles to read and essays to write.

the second will be easier for me in the sense that it is most similar to stuff that i've done that i know i'm relatively good at. but i have heard that some people do the first pathway with little science background and that they do well at it. so i don't know... which brings me to:

i also have a lot of self-doubt about decisions.

what i want most in the world... (well perhaps not most, but what i really would like)

would be a t who actually listened to me. over a period of time. so they got to the point of being able to see patterns. so basically... they took the time to understand BEFORE offering their 2c worth. i've had a lot of people offer me directives in my life. and often i thought that when their opinion differed from mine it was because they knew stuff i didn't or whatever. and the older i've gotten... the more i've come to realize... that most people offer their opinion without comprehending anything much at all about my situation, what it is that is important to me, and with considerably less information about things than me. in other words... listening to them is more likely to put me wrong than anything. hence my desire for a t who actually listened.

because generally... i think i'm pretty good about making decisions about me. but sometimes... well... i do have tinted glasses sometimes because of my history. borderline pathological. so it can help to have someone (who actually knows something about me) to perhaps nudge me a little when it seems i'm engaging in 'same old same old'. if that makes sense.

can you do liberal arts or something so you can start out doing all of that and then narrow down your choices a bit later?

Yeah, I understand wanting that. I think that, in my experience, relationships are not perfect, and you have to communicate your needs because if you don't they're just not going to know. I know it's easier said than done, because I have felt certain ways about my close relationships with people, and its just been like "this sucks."

Actually, I had a therapist for like 4 years, and she recently left the practice. At the time, I felt OK about it. Maybe even a little free. But now it's hitting me. There were a few things i felt like she misunderstood about me. But now I really really miss her, because she was my cheerleader. She always said things to make me feel better. It was great :) I could go to her. I feel like I'm lacking that right now. But I digress...

I wish you the best of luck with figuring school out too.

I could do liberal arts, but i already did it. I already have a degree. In psychology actually. From 2005. But I want to go back to school :)

I thought I remembered you from the students board :)

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree. But Bachelor of Social Science and Bachelor of Liberal Arts are similar with respect to allowing many of the same subjects as majors / supports / options. Bachelor of Science sometimes allows a Psychology Major, too, with support from Social Science-y subjects, sometimes...

I guess I was thinking that there might be a way to pursue classes in each of those subjects :-)

So you are looking at graduate studies? Have you considered maybe public health? It combines science and some social science, policy, etc. I always wished I had studied it.

> So you are looking at graduate studies? Have you considered maybe public health? It combines science and some social science, policy, etc. I always wished I had studied it.

... and then i went to graduate school and studied a masters (by research) and am just now writing up my phd thesis... it is meant to be done by early december but i think i'll manage a (better be the last one!) final extension to submit my march.

classes start for me in march. i am doing OY1 which involves 4 core papers (bio-chem, cell bio, epidemiology, anatomy and physiology) and... there are two pathways. you can either do bio-medical science (so you get bio-physics, more advanced bio-chem, genetics, option) or health science (so you get 3 social science-y papers about psychology of health and knowledge of the health system in this country etc). i have applied for both. the former is competitive entry - so not sure if i will get offered a place since hard to weight a Master of Arts degree in irrelevant subjects with the nations top science school leavers. if i do get an offer of both...

i'm tempted to take the bio-medical science. i know i'll be good at the later and will find it interesting. i... can cover that material on my own time if i wanted to that bad, however. teaching myself bio-physics etc is much much harder. and i can't do the labs without enrolling in the courses... in a way it feels risky... but i want to see how i do in science.

if i don't get selected for transition into medicine 2015 then i'll reasses things. i guess i'd like to do a double degree in science / health science in that case. leave open options for graduate school. bio-medical science research and health policy work, yeah. but really... i think i'd much rather be an orthopedic or neuro surgeon :)

if it turns out i really can't function outside the university and so i get an exemption to study more (even though i'm over my lifetime limit for the government loaning me money to study) then i'll do law and economics and politics

:)

If you don't mind my asking, what field is your PhD in? That's amazing that you plan to write a dissertation then continue in school. When I finished my doctorate, I was so done with being a student.

philosophy. i have had some time away... i prefer the university to the rest of the world. there isn't job security anymore. my friends (the lucky ones) pick up one year post-docs. that means they need to be applying for their next position before their current one has started. and it means they need to be independently wealthy and / or have portable partners or long distance partners who are prepared to support them much of the time. neither of those apply to me. so...

and partly i would like to do something a bit more concrete. and... i've had science envy for a long time. i feel very excited (though also scared, tis true) at the prospects of getting to study physical sciences (well, bio-physical sciences). who knows... maybe i'll end up in theoretical physics :-)

i love learning so i'm happy enough to return. there is something nice about structured learning, too. nothing like experience developing your own course content / lectures to appreciate those that others have developed over the years.

mostly... i'm excited because i'll get a community again. a community of people engaged in the pursuit of knowledge / excellence and a love of learning for its own sake. the rest of the world... does not seem to understand me... of course i know that most people at uni aren't like that. but it is where you typically find the few who are...

i miss hanging out with like-minded people. i feel privaledged to be in the position to do this. it is a mid-life crisis, i think. i'm having second thoughts about philosophy as a life partner...
