Inspiring (if not corny)

This came via my inbox today. I certainly could take some pointers from it (anything to justify "selfishness")...

i thought it was quite nice. maybe a little corny... but mostly nice. i agree that it is important to look after yourself. even if your main thing in life is looking after others... you need to look after yourself first to be in the place to look properly after them. i really honestly do believe this.

but i'm perhaps not known for my generosity of spirit. sigh.

do you have some little things to do to look after yourself? i remember having to pick some from Linehan's list...

- going for walks. this was before my injuries... but still, i really like nature walks. trees in particular. hearing birds.

- foam rolling. i know it is a bit weird but an hour with a foam roller is a self care thing that i do that really helps me. other people like getting a massage, i guess.

what do you have? what little things do you like to do?

hi alexandra_k.

i've been doing ok, but there were times when getting out of bed would be my biggest and most challenging feat. when it's bad, all the little mundane things (showering, eating, making the bed, etc.) are what count.

i've been feeling pretty good so i try and focus on finding pleasure in the mundane: walking my dog, bathing my dog, just walking, getting groceries, even socializing.

more than anything, it's trying not to tear myself down when I only see flaws in the mirror.

and i do like to treat myself, without feeling guilty. today i'm getting a massage.

thanks for your input...hope all is well.

A little bit corny, but it's a reminder that doing little things counts. Today, I'm putting up Halloween decorations inside the house, and if it weren't raining I'd do the outdoor decorations. I'm trying to get in the Holiday spirit even though I have to drag myself out of bed everyday.

i remember it being hard to get out of bed. i have days like that still. been having quite a few of them lately, actually.

one of the things i'm trying to experiment with... is to try and think of something nice to get out of bed for. some reason. even if it is just to go make coffee and get back to bed with it. and... well... take time to enjoy the coffee.

or sometimes to take something that actually feels like a chore... like having a shower and washing my hair... and trying to get myself into the spirit of *wanting* to do it. trying to remember how nice it can feel to stand under the hot water etc... i i totally get what you mean with finding pleasure in the 'mundane'. Linehan talks about pleasure... Well... perhaps not so much pleasure... more... peace. something. finding something in the moment of just participating mindfully in the moment. just doing what you are doing with awareness and taking some kind of pleasure in that. that right now... things are actually... okay.

i hope you enjoy your massage. and find some happiness in today.

Brynb, I really enjoyed reading this and found it helpful. I personally didn't find it corny at all. Thank you! -Angela
