Reading Out Loud

Posted by gadchik on May 16, 2012, at 16:59:22

I was in the library, yet again, and I heard a child reading to his mother.I loved the sound of it,and remembered how I also loved listening to the kids at school read to me,just at the beginning of their newly acquired skill. And the sound of my son reading to me years ago.I love to discover something I'd forgotten, something that made me smile to myself(and I didnt cry!)

Hearing my daughter and nephews read out loud to me was a joy. But even more, I enjoyed reading out loud to them. Especially Dr. Seuss. I put my daughter to bed reading Dr. Seuss books and stories until she was 15. Then she got a boyfriend and wanted to go to bed talking to him on her cell phone. But a few years ago, I was reading this really interesting novella by Tolstoy and read her a few pages that I knew she would like. She went out and bought the book. I live reading aloud. I wish my husband were into it, but he's not. Some couples read out loud to one another on a regular basis.

I also really enjoyed reading to my son.I know I read to him every day of his life, until he was 10.Then,he discovered books on tape.My hubby doesnt like to read at all.I could not get through a day without a book, but I did go 9 months w/o opening a single book during a major depression.

I swear I still remember the smell and the feel of the book I learned to read with in school. It had a monkey on it (not George)
Perhaps this is where my book hoarding comes from.

I love the feeling and heft of books. I haven't tried a kindle or nook yet, though I have listened to books on CD on long solitary drives. I once had a 5 hour drive and got Interview With a Vampire on CD from the library. I had read it years ago. It was great to listen to in the car.

But I guess e-books are the wave of the future. Even my p-doc, who is really into good fiction (we share book ideas all the time), bought himself and his wife a nook and he's in his early 70's.

Biggest reason got an e reader is the adjustable size font as now can read without glasses on which strain my eyes. Check into the new Nook ereader with back lit reading. Newly released $139. I think. And when you buy a book via the e readers much less expensive and you archieve those you read, share with others, and best of all if you have already bought the book it won't allow you to buy it again. So many times I gotten a book read about 50 pages and realized I read it before. Also before you purchase the book you given two or so trial chapters to read free to see if it's what you wish to purchase. Phillipa
