Gadchik! Nice to see you. The books I am reading are easy to read because they want to communicate their points. I am so thankful to be able to read these days. I have some catching up to do. How is college going for everyone?

We might go to Hawaii again. It's not certain. My son and husband want to go. The big island. They want to see lava :)

You must go to Hawaii again! What if the world ends in December?! Well, my son and his girlfriend will be moving next month for college. They'll have an apt near campus.I thought I was preparing myself for all of this, but I was surprised by a sudden flood of sorrow the other night.I went to hug my son goodnight, and decided to give him a peck on the cheek.I began to cry and cry.He said,"it had to happen sometime mom".Oh,Im going to be a complete mess next month.

I get the sense that he understands you pretty well. That seems good and very tender gadchik. It doesn't stop, does it? The growing up. You're doing really well it seems to me. Parents need to give each other these pep talks because it really is quite an experience, isn't it?

I missed my son too, very much to begin with.

It was such an innocent lovely thing....all those conversations about string theory or Tasmanian rainforests, not things we knew anything about, just what was in the news.

The sense of the passing of time? Irritant, panic inducing, calming (because closer to death....might as well cover that)? What should we feel about it? I don't like it myself.

What is this about the world ending this year?

I feel like I am missing something cultural.

Type in will the world end in 2012 and wiki pops up with '2012 phenomena'. After outlining various theories, this was towards the bottom:

Cultural Influence
"Ask an Astrobiologist", a NASA public outreach website, has received over 5000 questions from the public on the subject since 2007, some asking whether they should kill themselves, their children or their pets. In the United States, sales of private underground blast shelters have increased noticeably since 2009. In December 2009, Robert Vicino founded Vivos, a company that claims to offer discount shelters for the less well off. Their site features a countdown clock to December 2012. In Brazil, the Mayor of the City of São Francisco de Paula, Décio Colla, Rio Grande do Sul, has mobilized the population to prepare for the end of the world by stocking up on food and supplies. In the city of Corguinho, in the Mato Grosso do Sul, a colony is being built for survivors of the tragedy. In Alto Paraíso de Goiás, the hotels also make specific reservations for prophetic dates. In 2011, the Mexico tourism board stated its intentions to use the year 2012, without its apocalyptic connotations, as a means to revive Mexico's tourism industry, which had suffered as the country gained a reputation for drug wars and kidnapping. The initiative hopes to draw on the mystical appeal of the Maya ruins. On 21 December 2011, the Maya town of Tapachula in Chiapas activated an eight-foot digital clock counting down the days until the end of b'ak'tun 13, while in Izapa, a nearby archaeological site, Maya priests burned incense and prayed.

Recently I watched the movie Melancholia (which I just read in wiki as being called upon release as an apocolyptic 2012 'last supper') in which an asteroid hits Earth. It was very good IMO except for the end, but that was a tough end to handle. It's directed by Lars Von Trier and is not light hearted especially for parents.

There are many reasons that the world will end this year.

First is the Mayan calendar thingo.

Second is some hooha about the poles. Sometimes they shift (overdue!) and then everybody dies.

What else?

Maybe there are some asteroids about?

Then there is the human thing.

That is very funny.

Some writer said always to use 'which' instead of 'that' wherever possible.

In that spirit I am going to rephrase this sentence

>There are many reasons that the world will end this year.

There are many reasons as a consequence of which the world will end this year.

Well, movies are tough on me in general. But there is a boy my son's age which made it even tougher. And the director is notorious for his grueling films, though he lets his audiences off a little easier IMO this time around. You might be interested otoh because the main character suffers from depression of some sort, though her 'cure' is nothing to emulate. I made it through o.k. and would see it again.

There is another part to this rule, I'll be darned if I can remember it. They nag me as I write....

Kinda like the who/whom thing.

Then there is the when to use a comma rule. I always mix up which one usually necessitates a comma, the which or the that. Sheesh.

I read the "The Siege of Krishnapur" and thought of you.

Perhaps, by the very end of his life, in 1880, he had come to believe that a people, a nation, does not create itself according to its own best ideas, but is shaped by other forces, of which it has little knowledge.

The Way was a little sad,but joyful.I love movies that have dramatic acting, beautiful scenery, moody, broody, and intense music.Maybe Melancholia will be ok for me! We didnt like Drive,Carnage,or Tyrannosaur.Loved The Help,Tree of Life, and The Way.Also loved The Bucket List.I get dvds free at the library.I enjoy escaping into someone else's life for 2 hrs! Also, really enjoyed Bridesmaids, laughed so much, need to see more comedy.

Thanks for that. I have heard of JG Farrell but know nothing of him. I will order it. Far away times and places are more interesting to me which is why, even though he is fine, I could not concentrate on Don de Lillo.

I remember really enjoying "Life and Fate". Though some might find it grim it was actually about a feeling of freedom arising.

We are near the end,had to go to bed! However,we are at the part where they have decided that the other planet is moving away...I dont think its going to end with everyone alive and happy...dont tell me! I loved the scene where she and her sister are riding horses thru the early morning fog.Didnt the lead actress capture depression's look so well? I had that same thing where hubby was trying to put me in the bath, and then trying to eat at the table with family,so well portrayed by her! Will finish it tonight.

Well,I knew it would end badly. But at least they were holding hands outside. It was a strange movie. But I like things that are diff.and the way it was presented was certainly not like an average movie.Kind of like "Tree of Life",which I loved.

I was deeply upset by the scenes of the mother carrying her son through the rain trying insanely to get her him to the village after the death of her husband. I will put Tree of Life in my queue. The director made Thin Red Line, one of my favorite films. Though I cry buckets throughout I feel it is worthwhile. I agree that the bath scene was (in Melencholia) true at least to my experience. How impossible it was to bathe or do simple things, though of course the actor looked healthy (IMHO if I am truly picky) because I was skin and bone by then.
