Hi Phillipa,

I work with 5 pound weights, but do long reps while maintaining proper form to avoid injury.
I don't know how strong you are, but 10 pound weights are heavy, so I would start slow and build on
reps as you get stronger. Do you have any videos that's specific to weight training to help you with
form and technique? A trainer or a class would be ideal, but can be expensive and inconvenient -
(depending on your lifestyle)...a good video will do.

What works for my arms are good old push-ups done with variations of hand/arm placements under-
neath the body. You really see results fast with pushups, but be careful not to overdue and listen
to your body...if it hurts, stop and check your form to make sure you're not injuring yourself.

Have you ever tried yoga or pilates? Pilates is especially great for toning/tightening not just the upper,
but the whole body...if I had to do one type of workout, I would do pilates as it's very effective, and
gets results quickly. Yoga is great, too, especially for the mind - very centering and healing.

It's wonderful that you're motivated to take care of your body, Phillpa! But, don't focus on quick
results as much as gradual strength build-up while you ENJOY the workouts...you'll only do
it consistently if it's fun. The only way to maintain the results is to incorporate a fun exercise
routine into your lifestyle...walking, tennis, swimming, etc...whatever you like. Working out your
fingers on the computer while on babble or surfing the net doesn't count though...I'm definitely
guilty of this!

Well, Phillipa, you've got me motivated now! I'm going to give my poor dogs a break from
watching me click away on the computer and take them for a nice walk!

I think I heard my dogs say,"Thank you, Phillipa!" :)

Good luck with it!

Well you're definitely younger than me as cant do the full body push ups but can from knees. I used to do the machine weights at a gym. Very boring to me. Yes they are heavy. Machines were 40-50 pounds but my choice was to either buy 8 pound and then have to buy more or just get the heavier ones. The guy across the street works at the Y here and said to start with one weight above head hold in both hands and lower backwards up and down. Ideally one arm supporting elbow. I'd like to join the y but 80 a month no can do so this is better than nothing. Hey 63 and my bike six miles a night, mow the lawn, do the Yoga stretches for my bad back nightly. So just planning a few arm excercises. Seriously have bad discs some have fused on their own. Thanks for the lovely post gobble. ps will figure the mystery out I hope. Love Phillipa

Are you 63 years young?

Holy cow! And you do all that?!...bike, mow the lawn, yoga, knee push-ups...
You beat me by a mile - you're definitely a better woman than me.

I push myself to workout hard because it's my only drug against depression, but
some days I can barely get off from the bed to the couch. I'm usually horizontal.

You are an inspiration, Jan. You should be proud of yourself!

It's my antianxiety med. The way I look at it I hate doing stuff inside boring. Love being outdoors and always was active will continue til day I die. When in nursing school we had to write our own obituaries in sociology. I was a runner so mine was. I'm 120 living in Florida across the street from beach and until age 85 ran three miles a day on the beach. At 85 had to switch to walking. This one day at age 120 sitting on bench beneath a palm tree looking at ocean, sun out and shining, got chest pain and died. Well the running ended a few years ago fell and broke arm stupic curb. So went to the bike. I must be active. Taught Aerobic dance before nursing had own program and first kids program ever. I also ran five miles with the men at lunch, taught three classed a day, and choeographed all my own dance routines later at night. So basically stop and you lose it and not planning on that. Love Jan

Awww...Jan.

That is very moving, it brought tears to my eyes. You must have a lot of love for yourself to write such
a beautiful obituary. I usually hear music when I see a beautiful visual in my mind, and I hear
"Adagio from Mahler's Fifth Symphony" reading your post. Do you like classical music? You should
listen to it on the net. It's very beautiful.

You know, you continue to amaze me more and more each time we interact...it's so cool that you were
a dancer/choreographer! I used to dance, too,(couldn't choreograph though), and I know how creative
you have to be to choreograph. You are full of surprises, Phillipa!

Well, you've motivated me for the second time today. You have no idea how much you've helped today
as I'm going through a very rough patch in my life. If you're not planning on stopping and losing it,
I won't either. Thanks, Jan.

xoxo
