Cinema Mush

Posted by verne on May 30, 2009, at 0:45:12

Anyone remember the movie "Robin and Marion" with Audrey Hepburn and Sean Connery? I don't even like Sean Connery but this movie always reduces me to mush. Robert Shaw, a great score, rich screenplay, and lush scenes don't hurt either.

Finally had to buy it since it's never shown on cable TV anymore. Bought three more for gifts.

What movies turn you to mush?

"The Eye of the Needle" did it for me.

Donald Sutherland was wonderful.

'City of Angels' (even if some think it is cheese..lol) hits me too close to home. The movie came out close to my personal tragedies, and I really can't watch it anymore.

Jay,

I tried to watch this film just five days ago and gave up about half way through. It's one of my daughter's favorites so I tried to stick it out.

I don't know how it ended so can't draw any conclusions but I gave up when the angel seemed to think being human, having senses, and living in the flesh, were preferable to being a celestial being.

I'm guessing that he traded in his eternal wings for human mortality, a common Hollywood, even American, theme, glorifying man and the world. I could see where it was going. He falls in love with a human and sacrifices all.

I may give this movie another chance since you're the second person in a week to say it was one of their favorites.

I think I gave up precisely when he said something about admiring humans' greatest gift from God: FREE WILL.

If you believe in God, there's no such thing. If you don't believe in God, there's no such thing. I've read many philosophers, like Henri Bergson, Wittgenstein, and others on the subject, finally agreeing with the philosophical lunatic fringe that free will doesn't exist.

Theologically, free will is a paradox, for some mathematicians it's clear cut. I don't support mechanical determinism or even espouse "God's Soverenity" but really do believe free will is impossible. I rarely waste time arguing it, or even thinking about it - I'm not married to the idea.

After the angel relishes tasting a pear and laments lack of free will, I had NO CHOICE but to turn it off.

Hey Sigismund,

That was an excellent movie for any time. Kate Nelligan (was that her?) hurt me long time. I had forgotten Donald Sutherland was even in it. But it was a good thriller that could have been done by Hitchcock - don't tell me: Hitchcock did it? Did the Stones do the score?

Phillipa,

I've barely heard of this film but will check it out. Give a link, maybe review. What is it about this film that grabbed you?

Ya Verne, I know the acting and even translation of ideas does not hold up for deeper philisophical examination. It actually is the ending that hits a bit different. I don't wanna give it away and hope nobody else does, but for anybody who has gone through a similar experience, it is a trigger of so much impact (And we don't have to be "fallen angels"), very dangerous territory.

City of Angels is my favorite movie. I cry when I watch it. The intimacy and passion portrayed by the characters is celestial in itself. I don't believe there is anything in our mortal life that compares to feeling that way about another person--it is the ultimate high, mind in the clouds ecstacy. That movie gets into my soul, big time. I get chills down my spine just thinking about it.....

Pay it Forward is another one.

It was the intensity of the love story that got me in, until she finds out that this wonderful man has murdered her awful husband in the service of terrible ideals.

That makes three people who love this movie. I'm getting it back from my daughter and watching the whole thing soon. I'll suspend all my ideas about theology and science - which are probably crock anyway.

Haha Vern that movie has little or nothing to do with theology and science and more to do with human connection, passion, and intimacy...and the longing it can create within. That's the sad part. sniff.

The story line may not be that impressive, but the emotional intensity is what makes it a great movie. :)

I haven't watched in a few years. I'll have to watch it again soon.

"Bucket List"

Hmm. I didn't think this was one of 'those' types of movies from the advertisements.

It's been so long since I've watched a movie. I should take a vacation from life someday soon, rent a bunch of movies, and do nothing but lay on the chaise lounge all day watching them. Sounds like a good plan...I could use a good emotional cry too.

Oh-Beautiful Mind was another good one. See, that's how long it's been. I can only think of movies that came out years ago! lol

La Strada, a very bittersweet Italian film by Federico Fellini from I954.

Also: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, with Humphrey Bogart (I948)
