There was a famous person (whose name I forget) who had cancer (from smoking probably) and he needed a tracheotomy.
When people came to visit he would get them to light a cigarette which he would smoke through the hole in his throat.

Yes. I recall that, too.

Can't remember who it was, though sadly there have probably been others, famous and not-so.

I relate, being an ex-smoker of 15 years now. Nicotine is incredibly powerful in its grip on your body and mind. I crave a smoke to this day when in certain triggering circumstances. Thank God - I haven't touched one since April 1, 1994. Ever.

I always felt proud I could quit as I've read kicking it is as tough as kicking cocaine, in some ways. Maybe that's a lie, but I used it to tell myself I accomplished a huge thing. I can understand something as seemingly foolish and perhaps even gross, as smoking through the tracheostomy, though.

I remember the stranglehold cigarettes had on my life. Nicotine is one evil drug.

most of the time, people don't set up habits so they can live longer. instead, people live's are so they can have their friends and routines.

You guys in England have those pubs that everyone goes to. We had a TV show a few years ago called "Cheers" that claimed to be about a pub in Boston I think it was, although I didn't watch it.

By and large though, people have nowhere to go in this country (USA), if they want to get out of the house, especially if they live in the suburbs.

Australia used to have pubs with room for people to talk before it was all sold off to corporate entities.

I was on an overnight ferry that had a theatre in it for people to pass the time in.
Now, of course, the space has been sold off to some company selling a range of skin care products.
Some star comes on and says that it is hard to solve the problem of starvation or child poverty but we can all look after our skin.
It lasts 25 minutes and is on a loop.
I got through it one and a half times before the irony wore too thin.
