Speaking of road trips...

Posted by Amelia_in_StPaul on May 19, 2009, at 17:04:47

I am considering going on one by myself. Camping and driving by myself across the southern states. I am not sure if this is a good decision--I feel the need to get out and see things, and have new experiences, but is it okay to do it alone, when I am already alone a lot? I would try to make it to see a few friends in three different states, but still, there would be a lot of alone time.

I'm not worried about safety. I was thinking about camping by myself, but I figure that renting an airstream, RV, or Volkswagen camper would be safer.

What do you all think? I am in my 30s. No kids. I freelance for a living. I'd have to dip into savings to do it, but I haven't traveled in the last couple of years, and I need something novel in my life!

Where are you thinking of going?

I'd try Utah, but I'd love to go to the southern USA just to listen to people and maybe see the Mississippi River. But if I were you I'd drive to Bolivia, although maybe the roads there would be a worry.

You might meet more people if you are alone, if that's what you want.

I think solo trips are great as long as you are okay with it - depends on how you feel about your
aloneness. I, myself, love having the freedom to do whatever I want when I'm alone...but, then,
there are times when I'm lonely and I want to share the experience with others.

I go through phases where I'm a real social butterfly, and then I get disgusted and drained with all
the formalities, pomp and circumstance, and what-not. That's when I go under the radar to regroup,
and try to get my semi-sanity back.

Right now, I'm working on a trip where I can have both. I'm looking at guided trips through REI and
local hike clubs. You can mingle with people from all over the country(hopefully reasonable, tolerable,
and maybe even fun), but have the nights to yourself if you want.

I don't know if guided trips are your thing, but it might be worth looking into. I used to be repulsed by
visuals of random people congregating around the tour bus with cameras around their necks, but REI
adventure trips look really cool. Just look at "Italy:Cinque Terre Hike" -
http://www.rei.com/adventures/trips/europe/italy_cinque.html

What a change of channel this would be!!! One could finance such a trip by not seeing their T for 6 months.

Freelancing, 30's, no kids -sounds great to me! Dive into your savings - it's only money!
Do it while you can! I say go for it and have fun - whatever you decide!

I would love to hear what you end up doing!

~ ~ If you're comfortable with your own company, I think it sounds like a great idea.

~ ~ Would you park them in a camping park? They'd be better if it rains, believe me!!!

~ ~ Go for it! I think it sounds like a fantastic idea. Do you have a camera? If you do, maybe you could takes lots of photos & make an album, like I did for my pottery & let us all see where you went, after you get back.

I really think it sounds like a very good idea & don't worry about the being alone part unless it feels uncomfortable.

Isn't it safe there?

I can't defend myself and I'm going one of these years.

Though I hear there are all these bandits on cocaine somewhere or other.

Thanks everyone!!! I was thinking maybe it wasn't such a good idea to be alone so much, but I could meet people, and better still, I could go at my own pace, see what I want to see, etc.

I'll let you know when I plot my trip!

Personally I'd want someone with me. But alone is great if you can do it. Bolivia drive across the ocean? Phillipa
