National Geographic Special

Posted by verne on May 18, 2009, at 21:58:09

I live in Fairfield, Iowa, cult country I guess. I've been deeply involved with "full-metal jacket" gospel pentecostal churchs and the TM Movement. I haven't been to church since 9/11. Columbine, 9/11, BTK, and the other horrors, killed what spiritual life I had.

What struck me about Wayne Bent is the way he twisted scripture to meet his own lustful needs. Did Jesus get busy with his disciple's wives? Paul said they should throw someone like Wayne Bent out of the church in his first letter to the Cornithians.

When the National Geographic reporter asked Bent questions about sleeping with his own son's wife and lying with young girls naked, this imposter really showed his colors. He explained and even did a floor show for the camera.

He explained that God drove him to the floor and he "groaned" (suggesting he groaned in the Spirit). Every other word was "and". He talked and even looked like a Valley Girl.

Did Jesus break up marriages and sleep with OTHER men's wives? Jesus said he would dwell in us, not lie next to us naked.

Every "full" gospel church I've been to, has a few that think their EVERY thought is of God. After awhile, this really goes to their head and their human judgments and lusts become edits from God. This isn't new. You'll see it at any church that promotes healing, miracles and the like.

In spite of my bad experiences I still believe in miracles and the gifts of the Spirit. But you can't control or acquire a gift from the Holy Spirit, the way many do now. I mean, they have workshops to become prophets and healers. Wow. So man can, through works, acquire a gift from God?

Wayne Bent doesn't resemble Jesus in any way and wasn't Jesus supposed to come back in a cloud anyway?

Jesus spoke in parables, Wayne Bent "explains", puts his spin on things. Jesus NEVER explained. (either you have ears to hear or you don't) Wayne compared himself to an MD at one point. Geez, God needs to compare himself to an MD to explain lying naked with young girls?

Wayne Bent is as far from divine as BTK - also a church leader. He was led by the flesh and fortunately didn't kill anyone, although he's wounded many grievously.

John the Baptist said that one would come who would make the Way straight. How ironic, that this demon's name is WAYne BENT and he changed his name.

Prudence Welch has a website that keeps tracks of WB and promotes healing. This documentary is worth a look.

If not for Welch and National Geographic a pedophile who might take his entire group down with him and do a "Heaven's Gate", is in JAIL.

I think I should be blocked for offending Wayne Bent. Dr Bob blocks people for offending political parties and third cousins of the truly offended. I think I deserve a block.

Let's be fair.

Verne,

I'm visiting from that thread up there ^.

Hope you don't get the boot, but your post does have the relentless pace sometimes associated with rants. It's not that I disagree with the content or style, either -- just noting what you seem aware enough of yourself, and recognizing the style from some of my own expression.

Which brings me to the point, and I truly mean this -- why do you care?

I'm not saying you shouldn't --- I'm saying what is it about some of these ideas we get through media that matter so much to us? You seem to be saying he contradicts principles of your faith, and implicitly that would seem to devalue your faith. But is the external, media expression the real conflict, or is it typical of something close to home?

Hey, I'm not trying to do therapy on you ... I'm the one needing a frontal lobotomy ... but I really wonder if you have any insight on why something so distant from you or I sometimes matters so much. ?

Maybe I can see him on youtube?

I have not heard before of this interesting evangelist.

"...offending political parties and third cousins of the truly offended." -LOL!

And wanted to thank you for the laugh before you got your wish.

I know about BTK and valley girls. WAYne BENT?- I'm gonna go look him up now.

I care because a crime was commited. I hope, that by saying something, I might prevent further crime.

I can't sit by and let a pedophile now in prison for indecent sexual contact with minors, who's on appeal (who may get out of prison and do enormous harm) and NOT CARE.

I care.

You say: "Why do I care"?

Why do you care that I "care"? You seem to care more about me "caring" than the orginal issue. (I forget, but think it was original sin)

Why do you care?

The Exclusive Bretheren in Tasmania funneled all this cash toward the conservatives in the Federal election before last.

It's a sign of the times that this outfit is considered quasi respectable; at least it was by Mr Howard.

I'm old enough to remember (1965?) when my parents were disgusted by what they knew about them.

Hurts in a "Good Way"? Watching that documentary was like having a horse dildo pulled out of my uretha backwards - sort of like a normal exam in a VA hospital.

Sure it hurts good, when you've been hurt long enough.

Verne, hey, I'm with you bud. But I don't want to start abusing these guys in the shower. That just brings out the predator in those bigger bulls, and we all have to live on the tier with them, too. (So to speak. Figuratively on all that. Our prison and tier being mortal life and Planet Earth.)

I'm sort of interested because there is so much expression of concern going on these days about so many things, but it seems concerns expressed in the blogosphere don't always lead to action to resolve the concern. And I want to do something about it, because there are millions of women and children around the world suffering from similar crimes -- the young girls of Thailand, the women shuttled from country to country in the mid-East, many of the residents of youth detention centers and group homes in the U.S. (at my expense as a taxpayer), late teens from unstable backgrounds in prison with older adults, children unable to cry out from within the walls of their own wealthy family home...

So what can we do? What's the harm in leaving it to our legal system in Mr. Bent's case? Where does it get us personally to express our concern now that they have him pretty well contained?

Won't the appeal process make him confront the gap between society's sense of fairness, and his own unfairness towards his victims?

How would you complete this sentence? What verb phrase would you use to describe what will happen if he sits in prison, or continues his appeals?

"I can't sit by and let a pedophile now in prison for indecent sexual contact with minors and now on appeal ______________ and NOT CARE."

Verne - - missed this line in my most recent reply... That seems to be your most direct answer.

> I hope, that by saying something, I might prevent further crime.
>

The other follow up question asked why I care that you care. I probably already explained in general, it's because I care too, and I'm concerned about finding the most effective form of communication to express my concern. I think I'm asking more about your expression of concern, or expressions of concern in general, than about the particulars of the concern, which I seem to share.

The night and morning before I blew 6 days of sobriety, I had watched the 2 hour National Geographic documentary, written two senators and a congressman several emails about health care and other issues. I also spent hours researching lawnmowers and still wasn't sure when I ordered one online.

I can't handle the news or even past news: it only agitates me. Whenever I have lengthy periods of sobriety, I program out all the news channels on my TV remote. In fact, I can't even watch the history or animal planet channels. History is old news and animal planet mostly shows animals killing other animals.

I guess I shouldn't care about matters I can do nothing about. Geez, I'm hungover. The serenity prayer would be better.

I'll join PETA when animals start behaving ethically towards us and other animals. Are cats "fair"? I don't even think my lawn is being fair.

Thanks, that last line was priceless.
As for not worrying about things you can't do anything about..
That's kind of the nature of worrying isn't it?
I'm not a Christian but I rant, I become *livid* when I get racist emails, you know,
"We worship one god and if immagrants don't like it, they have rights, the right to leave - pass this on to your politicians..blah"

I just can't imagine Jesus sitting at his computer spewing hatred.. aside from the stupidity that , if he showed up, they wouldn't like him because he'd be a middle eastern immigrant..

Fairfield Iowa? What was the name of that school that used to be school for rich guys who couldn't make it into the Ivy League schools they were supposed to go to? Long long ago. I was in Iowa City and dated a number of those guys, went up (or was it down?) for weekends. Probably where I became an alcoholic. Then it became a guru u kinda place.... (?)

Ah, memories. Or lack thereof.

(Spent a number of years in Iowa, in school, before and after living in New York and Europe, but haven't been back in maybe 35 years?)

I still love the acquired taste of Iowa landscape.

The College closed and was bought by the Maharishi's TM Movement in the early 80's I think. I lived on the MIU campus off and on for 6 years. Now it's called MUM. (university of management)

I can't wait to leave Iowa but can never quite reach escape velocity. I grew up in the Northwest near the Pacific ocean and Cascade mountains with actual trees, mountains, and real lakes. Iowas has "ponds" and reseseviors. The smell in Iowa is an acquired taste too. I don't notice it unless I leave and come back. All that pig manure and fertilizer in the air.

I'm making the best of it. Besides, I've made a resolution that I need to be sober at least a year before I move.

Oh, yes! Parsons! Party school. Thanks for giving me that name!

I don't really remember pig and fertilizer smells, but I do remember the very weird smell of Cedar Rapids. Quaker Oats, I think. Who would think oats would smell that bad? (Actually, now that I think about it, it seems unlikely that it was Quaker Oats. Some cereal, anyway. Purina Dog Chow?)

Why do you need to be sober for a year before you give yourself the gift of living in a place you love? Maybe you haven't given yourself enough gifts. Don't mean to be presumptuous, but I think it's time for you to be kinder to yourself.

Verne, I lived in Fairfield (went to Parsons) and in the Northwest. I remember the Iowa pig smell and the Oregon pine smell. Now I'm in Northeast.
