I actually enjoyed myself.

Posted by SLS on May 10, 2009, at 3:51:01

A friend of mine had an party celebrating his first wedding anniversary yesterday. There were about 60 people there, most of whom I had never met. In the past, I had not been very good in social situations like this. I had experienced persistent anxiety, and sometimes was even paralyzed by it. This time was different, though. I have seen my bipolar depression remit to a great degree, which has been the biological source of my social anxiety. There are psychological sources as well. These, however, I have been working on for quite some time. Everything all came together for me yesterday, and I was able to enjoy myself at a social gathering for the first time that I can remember.

That's wonderful!

Now sounds a good time to follow up on that success, after savoring it sufficiently of course.

Thanks.

One neat thing is that I wasn't feeling particularly well biologically that day. So most of my success came from psychotherapy and doing "homework".

I don't think I have mentioned this before, but I once sustained a 100% full remission of my bipolar depression for well over 6 months. During this time, I became depressed about stuff, just as would any otherwise healthy person. When I lost a lover, I got depressed about it for awhile. The psychological depression that I experienced then felt - was - completely different from the bipolar depression. I almost enjoyed that psychological depression because I could work through it. I was able to process the issue psychologically and emotionally, and then move on without depression. I felt strong and empowered getting depressed and being able to deal with it such that the depression disappeared.

Again, the biological depression and the psychological (situational) depression felt completely different. I think it is helpful to recognize that using the work "depression" can represent a wide variety of etiologies ranging from the 100% biological to the 100% psychological, most of which fall somewhere in the middle with relative contributions by each.

~ ~ It's great when our (what I call) tools work.

~ ~ That is amazing! I didn't realize about the difference. I mean, I knew there was the brain chemical type, which my doctor explained to me was that I had had SO much stress, etc that it had actually caused my brain chemicals to change & the meds helped that part. This is interesting Scott, because I've never really thought about this in this way before.

~ ~ ~ I really appreciate this post of yours!! Thanks. Do you think you're in a remission now then? That would be wonderful.

(((((((((you)))))) luv, Kath
