Words

You have words that we hardly recognise. Do you say 'armoir'(sp?) for cupboard?

What about closet? Does that mean bedroom?
That's positively Shakespearean. Gloucester says 'I have locked it in my closet'.

It is one of the interesting things about American English.
Maybe it broke off from English English in the C18 whereas Australian English came away in the C19.
They say Australian English has similarities to English in Essex, which reminds me of the joke Helen Mirren (I think she came from Essex) told at the Oscars.
How can you tell when an Essex girl comes?
She drops her chips.

we would probably say 'cabinet'

a 'closet' is just the place where you keep your clothes and/or towels and stuff

I find it interesting that some words are different depending on what part of the US you are in. I suppose that might be true in Australia too?

Armoir is a piece of furniture that men keep their clothes in. Closet is where you keep clothes, shoes, things you want out of sight. Chips what's that? Here is would be something like a potatoe chip a snack. Love PJ

Fraffly (posh English)

Anyway, that's all in the past.

Nowadays, it's more like
"I'm gonna change my name like Bob Dylan did. He used to be called Shane or some sh*t'
or
'I've got an awesome resume. You know when you write an awesome essay and you use awesome words.....it's like that.'

There once was a sheerer,
by name Bluey Brink...
A div'l for work,
an' a div'l for drink...
'e could sheer his 100
a day w/out fail,
an' drink w/out winkin'
4 gallon o' ale...

(5 more verses), Rod

You see those Australians get put in the (I think) Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

I was glad to see The Triffids got in. They were the best Australian band. David McComb (main person in it) is long dead...heart transplant, heroin overdose.

And Rolf Harris got in and played Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport. They wouldn't be playing this verse these days...
Let me *b*s go loose, Bruce
Let me *b*s go loose
They're of no further use, Bruce
So let me *b*s go loose.

You know what I found out/just read?

I've always enjoyed the straightforwardly paranoid quality of the third verse of what used to be our(!) national anthem before we got Advance Australia Fair. But the last verse is new to me. Starting at verse 3.

O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter thine enemies,
And make them fall:
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On thee our hopes we fix:
God save us all.

Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.

From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

Lord grant that Marshall Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!
