I'm finally up to date

Posted by Dinah on October 30, 2007, at 18:10:12

Or at least not behind.

After over three years of being hopelessly and horribly behind at work, I'm now pretty much where I should be, with no horrible monsters hiding in the nooks and crannies of the office waiting to spring at me.

It's taken a couple of truly horrendous months, and little sleep for the last week culminating in no sleep at all Sunday night as I worked feverishly and barely left my desk.

So now if work is more than I can handle in the part time amount of time I have agreed to spend at work, I'll know I need to shed some work. It's no longer a question of trying to catch up.

I need a nap now.

Hey Dinah..
Glad you are feeling better. We kill ourselves with the notion of 'work' being the ebd all and be all. In an ironic twist, that reminds me of what the Nazi's had as a sign at the entrance to concentration camps.."Work is ultimate meaning" or something like that.(Sorry history buffs...I jumbled that up a bit...but it is the same meaning.) Work to live (good), not live to work...IMHO.

Jay :)

It feels good. Now I just need to not fall behind.

As expected I feel awful today physically. I always do after a deadline. Frova handled the migraine pain, but I still don't feel great. It's weird that Frova handles the headache pain, but not all the other migraine symptoms.

I've worked part time since my son was born. My goal is to average thirty hours a week, although due to the nature of my work, it isn't a steady number per week. Sometimes it's a whole lot more, and the rest of the time I tend to only work twentyfive hours a week, or when I'm not feeling well, even less.

And it well may be that I have more than thirty hours a week of work. I'll be able to judge that now since I'm caught up.

But I have come to accept that I really don't like my work. I liked the first eighteen years when my real job was taking care of Daddy. I like taking care of people I love, and being taken care of by them. I always said growing up that my goal was to be a homemaker. Maybe I had something there.

You keep revisiting that fantasy --- of staying at home. Maybe you should seriously give it more thought. Does it have to be an either/or situation? If I stay at home because I think it would be better for my mental health, I can't go therapy?

I think right now I'm comfortable with it being a fantasy. No one in my life really likes the idea. My husband thinks I like spending money too much to enjoy it. My therapist isn't crazy about the idea. And it doesn't feel urgent at the moment.

But I did find it interesting to understand why my job feels so different now than it used to. And I think it helps me accept my job a bit better now. Understanding why always helps me.

I think people who have an intrinsically rewarding job are so lucky.

Yes, I feel that way too sometimes.

Phillipa, is something going on in your life right now? I've been a bit concerned about you lately from your posts.

I didn't mean in any bad way. Just that you've expressed thoughts that sound a bit like you're frazzled and frayed in real life. You are so often supportive of others, but don't as often post of your own problems. I wanted to give you an opening to share, if you wished to.

I knew I shouldn't have said that

The fates really hate it when I do that, and punish me smartly.

My less than six month old computer broke and is on its way back to the factory to have its little hard drive wiped while it's being fixed. And I spent days and days trying to get a complete working backup of everything I could think of backing up when it kept crashing and only booted once in twenty times at most. Then putting it on my old computer, which fortunately I still have.

So... I feel lucky in my unluckiness. At least it waited until my deadline was over. And it let me (with a lot of effort) back up everything - I hope. And I do still have this old computer.

But... Maybe the fates wouldn't have zapped me if I hadn't talked about being caught up.

Phillipa, I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you. I will, I promise.

That's what I'm figuring. :)

I know I'll want to put it back together when it comes back, because this one's so annoyingly slow. But I'd probably be better off waiting till I catch up a bit.

I can't even imagine what would have happened if it had broken a week earlier.

I can't decide whether to be mad at the fates or mad at myself for buying the same brand of this computer, which had to be sent to the shop a couple of times in three years.
