I'm not an expert, but I know of a few things you can try if things don't improve:

1. Switch off the computer, leave for a minute or so, and switch on again.
2. Run your virus protection software (could take a couple of hours).
3. Run scandisk (could take a while, depending on the size of your hard drive).
4. Run defrag (can take what seems like forever; leave it running overnight).

I don't know what's making your internet slow; could be any one of several things, but usually I think that kind of thing is caused by your processor doing too many things at one, and switching off and on again fixes it.

I'm sure people who know more will correct me if I'm wrong...

Good luck!
Tamar

This is an online virus scanner and adware and malware scanner. It will remove whatever it finds for free. I use it a lot at work.

I may have to call Geek Squad out here i am sure do want to pay 89.99 for their dumb dianostic fee, but if i have to i will. I have to have music downloads.

And plus i hate sitting and staring at a loading screen for a couple of minutes. Like this one i just tried to pull up just to post this.

Thanks, I have OCD really bad, well, i go nuts when i cant find out whats wrong. So im may call them tommorow after a long day at work, they may not charge, their ok sometimes.

Anyways. Thanks for helping some of this anxiety created by this.

Matt

Your looking at Geek Squad right here,i was part of Best Buy when they took on that iddiotic project, the fees are horrid.

Anyway, let me recomend this if u can do this, first obviously save whatever u can, however u can,usb key drives are great, burn to a cd etc.

Second just swipe it,im assuming you have a RESTORE CD,your offline message makes me believe its your connection and that is a easy problem, however since you just removed a virus that would instead lead me to believe that this is a big problem.

What brand is the puter?

I strongly recommend using this free service. It finds things that Norton misses.

If your security is not up to date, then your computer is constantly vulnerable to malware.

You can get free software to remove all sorts of stuff that isn't viruses but which slows down your computer.

Sometimes that happens when your service is interupted, and you click on the warning box to continue working despite the service interruption. If that's the problem, pull down the file menu and click on "work online". Because some of your software lets you online, then the problem is likely in a setting in mediaplayer. Unfortunately, I know nothing about settings in that package.

You'll get them back.

You should start with visiting that housecall site. Free and totally up-to-date virus and malware scanning. It takes a little while, but it would take about the same time for a technician to scan your computer. Think about it. There is no magic a technician can do to speed up a slow process.

I get that a lot since I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7. I think I just click OK or something and it lets me go on. Really annoying, though. I'm not all that pleased with the upgrade.

Good luck.

Why are you tolerating this, what is the message your clicking away,is it the same "working offline message"?

I'm assuming it's the same message. It's something like "No connection to the internet available. Reconnect or work offline?" Or something along those lines. I don't get it all that much, and I suspect it happens when my dial-up connection has pooped down to zero at the same time I'm trying to open a window using IE7. I tend to use Firefox as much as IE, and it doesn't happen enough to make me make the time to try to figure out how to make it stop short of uninstalling IE7. Also, I like the tabs feature on version 7 more than I dislike that message.

Heck, I'm just really proud I finally learned how to make the stupid "Spybot has prevented blah blah blah" windows from popping up and locking up IE til I click on it.

I'm pretty good with computers and I really hate to see when people send those computers to those computer repair shops and other "fix it" places.

There are lot of computer related forums, and even non-computer forums like this one where people will help you and you can fix your problem for free.

Those computer shops rip people off big time. Best Buy, Geek Squad, etc. Geek Squad I know charges like $250 to install an OS (Operating System), like $150 to install RAM (which takes about literally one minute to do). It's beyond insulting. I mean they charge so much so things that are incredibly simple. Trust me, I wouldn't go to any of them. Just ask people in any forum and they'll help you.

Yep in all honesty if it comes to being that bad,and your gonna actualy shell out 200 bucks, well u have a montier etc,a decent tower will cost you not much more than that and youll have a BRAND new pc,unless i built one from the ground up and had it totaly custom, about far as id go on the money route is replacing a known bad hard drive, cant think of much else.

Sorry, I don't do windows... heh heh heh!

IE7 is horrible. They installed it at a place I volunteer at. I still have IE6 but I don't use it unless a site is so badly designed that it wont work with Firefox.

It is possable to roll back to IE56,however its not a extremly simple process, its a bit drawn out for the average user.

Im personaly not even sure if IE7 is out of beta yet?I know a customer of mine was automaticaly updated because she has some windows software running and i dont think she ever saw the split second option asking if you want to.

Nevertheless i have to visit there and toll it back, the instructions to do so are abundant using those keywords on google, but again its not hard but not a as simple as add/remove a program that ur everydau user would do.
