How can I achieve my dream of traveling the world?

Posted by TexasChic on January 10, 2007, at 23:21:09

Or just plain old traveling! I haven't been to either New Mexico or Louisiana even though they're bordering states I've always wanted to visit. I'm just such an introvert I never have anybody to go with.

Of course my ultimate dream is Australia and Europe. Or really any country for that matter.

So how can I achieve my goal, keeping in mind I have no money or anyone to travel with? Any suggestions, or is it just a futile dream?

I had a friend who had a dream job. She worked for this company that put together vacation packages at luxury resorts for people who had too much money. She had the burden of going to these resorts and checking them out, seeing what there was to do, that sort of thing.

And she got paid to do it, too.

that's really the only thing i can think. or learn to hustle? an untimely accident at your local walmart? i give up.

i do have a tip on getting into concerts free, by registering people to vote. can give you some info on that, if you're interested.

also, i have a friend who travels a whole lot. by car. but, somehow she finds some really great places in the us. and camps out, so that saves quite a bit. but, she ends up spending twice as much on boose for the camping trip. perhaps cheap beer would help?

I'm with finelinebob, start looking for jobs that include travel.

Also, I'm by myself too and just used to sit at home. Then I got over that.

I found you just can't wait for life to come to you, you have to go out and get it. You can do it!

Hey!

Well, travel can be very cheap. Certainly here in Europe, you can stay in backpacker youth hostels for around umm, 30 bucks a night. Okay so you might be sharing a dorm, but really most youth hostels these days are pretty comfortable, and they are a fantastic way to meet people. They have travel guide books such as lonely planet, rough guide, and another I can't quite remember, but they do plenty of 'Europe on a shoe-string' titles. You can work to pay for board and lodgings - there's this thing called 'woof' meaning 'working on organic farms' and you work during the day and get board and lodging. There's great public transportation here in Europe, so you definately don't need to hire a car (a waste of money). Within Europe, there are plenty I mean plenty of cheap airlines that fly around Europe, a major one called Ryanair, which I have used alot. You can get fares for as little as 1.99 Euro (plus tax etc).

As for travel partners, just go it alone and you meet people along the way, particuary if you stay in youth hostels. And don't go thinking that they're just for the 'youths' - I meet someone who was 65 and who was just seeing the world like everybody else.

Its very easily done and done cheaply. Although at the moment you don't get much pound for your dollar (which is great for us brits but not so good for you folks in the US!) And I think that Europe will probably seem expensive to Americans, we pay alot more tax on goods and services, so eating out is more expensive in Europe and things like that. Although prices vary alot between country to country - the UK is very expensive along with the Scando countries, but former eastern soviet block countries are cheap and so is the mediterreanen by comparison. And there's always macdonalds.

Anyway I had a pal how travelled through cental america on her own and I regularly travel on my own. Although as a solo female, you do need to be abit more careful.

Make a plan, save regulary even if it takes a couple of years, and research your travelling. Buy those guide books I mentioned, they will do the hard work for you. They contain listings of the best youth hostels, places to go and see, things to eat, maps, how to get from place to place.....everything you need to know basically.

Anyway I'm going on abit.

You're welcome to come and stay with me whenever!!

Marrying rich has crossed my mind, but I can't even seem marry poor! Or get a date for that matter!'
Your friend sounds like she has the right idea! But does she have someone who goes with her? I think that's my biggest problem.

Wow! I hit the jackpot with you! You now all kinds of stuff! I'm saving what you wrote for future reference. Although I have to admit when I hear hostel, I think of the movie, which is scary as all get out! I had never heard the word until I watched it. Not that it would ever stop me if I had the opportunity, but still... creepy!

Thanks for your invite too!

Wow! You've lived my dream! That's incredible!

Hi Tex,
I have always been a poor student and managed to travel.

you can see if you can get a position within your company to do some training abroad, or attend a trade show or a conference.

I bet you can find a way to save up 200 for the next couple of months. You can definitely do a cool road trip on a few hundred dollars. Find Campgrounds or fly for cheap to a big city and stay in a youth hostel (yes, there are actually youth hostels in the USA!!)

Take a look on travel websites for "last-minute deals".

If you can negotiate a long weekend, and you have a passport, you can often find fantastic package deals for a couple of nights and a flight starting from only a few hundred dollars to Europe.

Remember, you can always make money, but you can't make time ;o)
