Depends on what the fabric is. Also depends on the DYE in the fabric! It may be 100% cotton and dyed with something that will run or fade if you wash it, OR it could shrink up!

Go ahead and dry clean it. THEN air it out for a few days before you put it on the bed. It should be okay. Really.

IF you absolutely MUST wash it use a very mild soap like Woolite and cold water only. Hand wash it in the bath tub. Do not wring, twist, etc. and it will take forever to line dry. But realize it could still fade/have colors run/shrink/spot/ etc.

If it was expensive and/or you really like it you better dry clean it!

I've washed (and dried) my dry clean only quilt many times and so far so good. I agree with MidnightBlue though... at least test a spot to see if the colors will bleed before you do the entire thing.

Thanks guys but it looks like it worked machine washed it in one of those big new front load washers and put in the dryer on delicate. It also had a suadey material on one side. I covered myself and bought another first at Bed, Bath, and Linen. As a what if it doesn't work? Now I can return it. Chloe peed on it the other morning hence why we had to get it cleaned fast. She also will be spayed next Thursday hope she holds off on heat til then. Love Phillipa
