journey around the world in 15 hours

Posted by LlurpsieBlossom on January 8, 2007, at 18:44:13

Um, yeah...

so, it took 4 days of trying, but I finally got a seat on a plane outta S. America.

I went from Buenos Aires to Santiago Chile. Then we all had to deplane, run through customs and replane all the while tempted by Lindt chocolate and Dior perfume at the duty free displays.

Back on the plane (I got an aisle seat, next to a young couple. they were nice, not annoying, and they didn't invade my personal space).

11 hours of FUn FuN fUN!!! hmm- I'm bored, let's have some wine with my seroquel and then try to walk down the turbulent aisles to brush my teeth before the big sleep. (don't worry, it was kind of loopy, but I have good balance courtesy of equestrian vacation).

good nap. I woke up when my low cal breakfast enticed me with the smell of ... asparagus and chicken breast at 4 in the morning. nothing like some asparagus to get the wee hours started off right! and some grapefruit too! and why not throw in a bit of strawberry jam on some whole grain pan?

yum yum!

on to Toronto. The funniest thing happened. I looked in the customs line and saw!! my HUSBAND! all the way at the front. He had apparently caught the flight from Sao Paolo that I was not able to go for (not having a Brazillian visa, nor a Brazillian wax, which apparently will also work at some ports of entry).

Neither US nor Canadian customs even give a crap that I was on a cattle ranch, stomping around in livestock poo, that I was importing granola bars. My liquids were never enquired about either! after all that tedious packing. 3 oz in 1 quart zipper bag. and separating liquid Rx, because they go into a separate zipper bag. agonizing over whether mascara counts as liquid.

no one cares, apparently. stamp stamp stamp. go catch your plane. Made my connection to the USA. no problems there. But they moved my bus stop and I had to run through an intersection on 5 hours of sleep running on provigil fumes. oh well. didn't get run over. That would have been ironic, huh?

now I get to unpack my Yerba Mate gourds and my silver straws Bombilla and see if this mate thing is really as cool as it looks. I like the herb though, so I am willing to look like a wierdo if I can strain the stems and the dust from my brewing experience...

sigh... no more beef. :(

back to boneless skinless chicken breast. I need to lose 10 lbs or else I'm going to have to buy new pants. sigh...

At least your journey was more or less uneventful.

It took me 20 hours to do a normal 12 hour bus ride last week. I missed my connecting bus and ride from the bus station and all that. Oh and my luggage didn't arrive. It was quite a mess for a bit. But it's great now.

I hope you had a great vacation!

Sounds like your vacations were fun like mine. We left on Christmas Day cause my Daughter verbally attacked me and I was doing so well. So who needs a vacation? Home is vacation now to be. My own bed and routines. Love Phillipa

I realize you had a difficult time, but it sounds so exciting to me! I would love to go to Brazil! I dream of seeing the jungle, it fascinates me. The jungle, the ocean, sandy white beaches, the mountains, forests with trees that have been around for a million years, the African plains. Then there's the Pyramids, quaint little villages in Europe, the ancient ruins of Greece or Rome, the Castles in... where ever the castles are. I dream of these things. So many of us stay in our own tiny area of the world, never venturing anywhere different. But there's such a vast world out there that is beyond imagination.

Okay, I think I've reached my drama queen quota for the day. Goodnight everyone!

Well, here's the best instructions I could find.
1. rinse out gourd from last time
2. stick in the straw (bombilla)
3. I fill the gourd up about halfway with yerba. It looks like dried grass, and is kind of powdery. I add about a half teaspoon of fructose (I'm sure sucrose is fine too, but I happen to have fructose at home right now) Sometimes I add a peppermint tea bag or a little curl of orange peel for aroma.

4. Then I use hot water (not boiling, but perhaps 90 centigrade) and carefully pour it down the bombilla. The idea is to get the hot water in the bottom of the gourd and let the yerba float on top of it. Apparently the first sip is the "fool's mate" and the tea master has to drink this one (kind of has a lot of sludge in it).

5. After a few sips, I notice that I need to refill my gourd. (repeat 4, above).

6. After about 5 refills, the brew is kind of watery. time to start over.

************
I find it stimulating and relaxing. astringent and bitter, but I like it. Maybe it helps keep my appetite in check. I feel less hungry since I returned, but that may also be my system adjusting from white bread, butter and red meat to a more veggie and fruity and whole grainy diet.

Um no, I guess I don't. Thanks though. means a lot to me :)

Usually I go for quantity over quality.

My WORD/THOUGHT ratio is abnormally high. Still haven't found a good medication for that one. Sleep works well.

yes Phillipa, you're right. I forgot the Blüte.

I guess I just have little phases in my self-identity, and I feel that a name is a way to express that.
