Well, I work till 11pm, then I will *carefully* drive home, praying to not encounter anyone who is driving under the influence, maybe hopping to their final location (seriously, this scares me)to ring in the NY. I may watch TV till 1230, then go to bed if tired. New Years's eve hasn't been any kind of big social occasion to me for over 20 years - back even when I would have been called 'younger' <shrug>
I don't think it's completely an age thing though.
Parties were never my thing....I can tolerate small groups of people I know well, for short gatherings, but large groups of strangers, with the noise, all that input......no, no....waaaay too stressful for me. Sometimes it's hard to convince others that that sort of social setting is *not* fun for everyone.What will you be doing Phillipa?

I didn't mean to sound in my post above like I'm saying everyone who is out celebrating on New Year's Eve drives under the influence. Or even that everyone who goes out of New Year's Eve is under the influence of anything.
It's just that some do, some are, it's very dangerous and it's touched my life in the past, so I'm very careful, aware and sometimes - scared - to be out driving between certain hours. But I only have about a 7 minute drive home, so it should be okay.

I'm staying it.. and I am one of the young ones. I never have been a "good" 20-something year old. Oh well. :)
I'm going to get some nice blankets and plant myself on the couch for awhile. I like watching the tv as all the other counrties who are in differnet time zones hit midnight and seeing clips of their celebrations. I'm on the east coast myself, and I'm sure I'll watch NY come midnight. Then bed by 12:30 or 1. Someone gave me godiva hot chocolate mix for my birthday and I'm planning on trying that tonight. Yum. Huge chocolate addict. If I'm in the mood I might make up a margarita (my favorite) but that's it. No crazy partying for me.
Last year I went to First Night near DC. I hear they have that all over the country. Has anyone ever been? I enjoyed it a lot, but this year I dont really have anyone to go with. Oh well. Theres always next year.

My husband is driving me crazy(crazier) about this. He convinced himself that friends we normally spend New Year's with have us on their B list and won't want to do anything even though I told him they did. He told me that he wanted me and him to go out to dinner on New Year's, then changed it to dinner with a movie (theatre serves food) so when our friend called a few minutes ago I told her we would be able to do something after 9 p.m. Now he says, well I thought they didn't want to do anything with us, I don't want to go to dinner or a movie if they want to do something with us. So I called my friend back and left a lame message saying, uh, if you want to do something earlier, call me. We, uh, really don't want to go to a movie. ARGH!!!
I'm depressed anyway and feel like staying home. To me it's just another Sunday night. It's not like anything changes except I chuck out the old calendar and hang up the new one.

I have always hated going out on New Years because we need to be home to sweep out the old year and welcome the new. It'll be good to sweep out the old year this year. The last three years have not been my best. And I'll have to think of something wonderful to welcome in 2007, something festive, so that 2007 will think kindly of me and mine.
When I was growing up, my family always held a big New Years Day party, so we spent New Years Eve rolling meatballs and preparing party food. Somewhere along the line, they quit having the party, but kept fixing the food. So New Years eve will forever be associated with eggy raw meat in my memories, and New Years Day with eating way way too much.

Well, I decided to go against my hermit-like tendencies and go to a friend's house to hang tonight. We're just going to watch movies and hang out with her boyfriend and 6 year old daughter. I know, what a party animal! But it actually took a lot of effort to decide to leave the house. I'm just so antisocial these days.

Staying home.
Hubby & I are going to watch the new Jet Li video & we don't drink, but I bought a pretty bottle of bubbly dark grape juice & we'll have it in fancy glasses.
Part of me will have in my mind that my son is in the hospital. Hopefully he'll be so zonked with meds that he won't even know it's New Years Eve, although I guess he will, cuz his GF will visit him til visiting hours are over at 8 & I'm sure she'll be telling him that she wishes she could be there with him. She told me on the phone earlier that it's going to be really hard for her.

He's up for grabs. I don't allow talking during movies and if I go I'll violate my rule and fight with him.
We're back to going to dinner/movie and calling our friends afterwards. This took four phone calls. I cannot stand indecisiveness.
