This am I thought Chloe was going through her first heat a little blood on the carpet. Then we noticed some feces with it so to the Vet. She has a bacterial infection and on Cipro now which she promptly vomited when the Vet gave her the first pill. And chicken and rice for three days. So my question is how bad is it when a pup goes through heat? No plans to breed. But I don't want her to get fat like Teddy. And I never spayed or neurtered my male Brandy years ago and he lived to be l7 with no cancers. So I have no experience with females. Any advise? Thanks Phillipa

You *must* have her spayed.. please. Any dogs in the area will know when she is in heat, and will do everything they can to get at her.. and she will do what she can to get at them.. while you might quite like the idea of some cute little pupppies, you then have to find ~good~ homes for all of them..
I am a huge believer that all pets should be neutered / spayed.. only people with a breeding license should be allowed un-neutered pets.. there is a huge problem in the UK, the US and Canada (and probably elsewhere, but they are the countries I have read up on) with ferel pets.
But, from the dogs we have owned in my life, I do seem to remember vets reccomending waiting until after their first season to get a female dog spayed.

I'm also of the opinion that pets one is not intending to breed should be neutered, even if you think there will NEVER be chance an accidental conception would occur.
On personal thought and experience, hygienic concerns became an issue for me with a family member's nonneutered female. I got to the point I would not visit when their dog was in heat. I had a piece of clothing ruined. Not a pleasant thing to discuss and maybe the circumstances were unusual but -------

please spay her. unspayed females have a slightly bigger chance of having cancer. i lost one because she had had so many other medical problems that we didn't want to put her under again.......big mistake. she got breast cancer.
plus, you'll always live with the possibility that you'll have a litter of unwanted puppies and the dog population is out of control now.
please spray her. keeps your house cleaner and she won't get fat if you don't feed her more..........pat

Please spay your doggy, Phillipa. I agree with the others for all the reasons given. Unless you want a housefull of Chloes and Brandys, I think it is best to neuter our pets.

YES, Jan spay her! I have 3 cavalier king charles spaniels, one being a girl and I couldn't spay her at first because she is show quality and the breeder wanted her to have one litter and she would get first pick of pup - well I didn't want to breed her but had to go through one heat and then the breeder got cancer and told me to go ahead and spay her, but did you realize that even going through one heat increases the likelihood of the dog getting breast cancer? It does! Thankfully my girl is now 8 going on 9 and very healthy but please, go ahead and spay her. You can easily control how much she eats. My little dogs get a measured cup a day of food plus a treat here and there and are not fat.

Absolutely spay her. Not only does it decrease the chance of cancer, but your house will stay cleaner, and Chloe won't have the psychological ill effects of twice a year looking for something she can't have.
I spay mine as soon as I possibly can, and my vet doesn't consider it necessary to wait for their first heat. I tell him to tell me the earliest possible age, and I do it then.
And while you're at it, don't forget to microchip her if you haven't already. Even the best protected dog can get separated from its owner, and microchips are now the accepted method of checking for ownership. My vet won't even accept boarders unless they're microchipped.

I have a female Cavalier! She is unfortunately grossly overweight and I'm about to stop my lifelong practice of freefeeding because of it. She weighs 35 pounds, and although she's a big girl, she's not supposed to be that big.
They're great dogs, aren't they? If we decide not to get another Aussie or Collie and stay with something smaller, we'll probably look for another one.
Do yours snore? Ours raises the roof with her snores.

She probably snores b/c she is overweight. I know fat cats who snore.

I know that's why *I* snore. :)
But her snout is also shortish, and I was wondering if they traditionally had similar problems to the brachycephalic breeds.
I swear, I've only had one or two really fat dogs in my life with free feeding. Usually if they know it's available, it's not so important to them.

Clear Skies you remember my Brandy my baby I will cry as If I thought I could have little Brandy's I wouldn't hesitate. But guys how in a neighborhood of neutered little dogs like her do they end up at your door when they all walk on leashes. And I do plan on neutering her but is it after the first heat or before. Dinah we will make an appointment to have her spayed. Hopefully this intestinal thing clears up. No movement bowel wise today is this good or bad? On chicken and rice and the Cipro? And over six months now? Love Jan or whatever you chose to call me it's fine.

I know how you feel. I lost my kitty I had for 11 years. The only friend I had. It was several years ago and it just about killed me. Literally. Now I have my new kitty.
I think the problem of overpopulation applies to all of us. There's so many that are homeless that we can give loving homes to. We have control that these animals do not. We can help them have a better life. By neutering we give homeless anmials homes they wouldn't have had otherwise. By neutering Chloe you give others a chance of a loving home.

T I think I worry the most about the fact that my Daughter took her Dauschand in to be neutered and she died just a pup. My guess is she was intubated and noone made sure she was breathing on her own. It changed my Daughter for life . The One that I just visited in Florida bad trip won't get into that here it's not the time or place. But Chloe as soon as she's well will have to be neutered the Vet did say that they use laparoscopy. But still disolving stitches. Love Jan

Dinah, just saw your message! Sorry I did not reply earlier. Aren't they the greatest dogs? I am so attached to my female, she is "my heartbeat at my feet". YES she snores worse than the boys! The older she gets she snores even more! I think it is due to their short noses but my two boys hardly snore at all!
