For those with illogical fears...

Posted by Michael83 on December 17, 2006, at 20:57:35

Were you scared of things (moreso than most) even when you were a little kid?

I was scared of a lot of things when I was little. Ghosts, aliens, etc. Now even as an adult, I'm still scared of certain things (I won't mention them because I don't want to freak anyone out).

Anyone else like this? Did you obsess of illogical fears even as a child?

Specifically, anyone scared of really "far out" type of things? Like what I mentioned, ghosts, aliens, the world to end, etc?

For a time I was really scared of death and I still am. And it wasn't as a child that I had the illogical fears. It's now as an older adult. Love Phillipa ps anything and everything scares me. What a nutcase I am any solution?

I was really scared of all sorts of things. I don't think they are illogical fears as a child, however. Lots of things are scary to children and it makes perfect sense in their head. There's usually a reason for what we're scared of. But it doesn't make it easier if other people don't understand.

I was always scared that the house would burn down, myself, even though nothing close to that ever happened. It frightened me so much, and I would imagine I smelled smoke and have nightmares and such. I also was really afraid of getting kidnapped because my parents drummed the stranger-danger thing into my head. And I was scared someone would break in the house. Those were my biggest fears. If I really think about ghosts, I can get pretty freaked out about that, but it doesn't come spontaneously, I have to hear a story or something.

It's not illogical to feel scared of death as one gets older. I would think it would be more illogical as a child, since most children don't die. But I think it makes perfect sense that as someone got older they would be more scared of dying, since obviously there's a higher chance. I know it's something that scares me, and I'm only 20!

You're not the only one, lol. Death has always been my biggest fear, but in general, I'm terribly scared of the "unknown." Anything like that. That's why as a kid I was terrified beyond words of especially aliens and ghosts. Those fears are pretty much gone. But they were replaced by religious thought and now as of today (which is what prompted me to write this thread) a science experiment they're doing in Switzerland that frankly has me terrified. The response from scientists about any sort of problem that could arise is "oh nothing will happen....probably." More unknowns for me to worry over. =(

That's true a lot of kids are scared of a lot of things because they are impressionable.

But I was far more scared that most kids. FAR more. I was scared of everything and I think that fear translates to today's fear. I wondered if others who suffer greatly from chronic fear as adults also suffered as children.

It's weird, nothing really bad ever happened to me when I was a kid or anything like that. Nothing could have provoked it. I was just born with fears of these things. I know others' fears are provoked by events, but I wondered if others were "born scared" as I was. Must be a chemical imbalance of some sort (but I'm no psychologist, just my guess).

This reminds me of something I've read about called 'The Highly Sensitive Person'. Here's a link to a website if you're interested http://www.hsperson.com/

Here's a little of what it says:
"This trait is normal--it is inherited by 15 to 20% of the population, and indeed the same percentage seems to be present in all higher animals.

Being an HSP means your nervous system is more sensitive to subtleties. Your sight, hearing, and sense of smell are not necessarily keener (although they may be). But your brain processes information and reflects on it more deeply.

Being an HSP also means, necessarily, that you are more easilyoverstimulated, stressed out, overwhelmed."

I found the whole theory very enlightening.

I'm still learning about it actually. One thing I've read that I'm trying to implement is 'reframing the past'. Basically its taking those things you feel so bad about that happened in the past, and revaluate(sp) them with the knowledge that as a HSP these things aren't failures, but just a normal reaction to a situation. I'm still trying to do it. I'll be glad when I get moved and can start seeing a T again.

Demons, evil spirits which are real. Dont mess with the wrong "toys" like and especially Ouija Boards,

Bad things have happened when i have played around with it, picture flew off the wall. I screamed and threw it away. But seriously people have been, well in the catholic church been "possessed" by evil spirits which require Exorcism.

Hope thats not too much.

Wow, that really describes me. I read some of the website and it really describes me. I'm also quite shy and extremely nervous in social situations.

I don't feel overwhelmed by everyday things as the site said, but certain things I become obsessed over, anything with an "unknown" involved in it.

Thanks for the website TexasChic.

No, no! I'm very afraid of stairs. I'd take an elevator or escalator over stairs any day. And just forget about those stairs you can see between. You know the ones I'm talking about?

That is so true, when I see stairs... its like an instant injection of Valium!

The worst elevators are the ones with no windows and funny noices... eeeeek!

Elevators should be banned! I would prefer climbing a rope outdoors :-) (not really)

>>> No, no! I'm very afraid of stairs. I'd take an elevator or escalator over stairs any day. And just forget about those stairs you can see between. You know the ones I'm talking about?<<<

but what about if the power were to go out WHILE you were in an elevator? escalators and moving walkways can be easily exited when the power is out...elevators...trapped.........aaack! having breathing troubles just writing about it!

and those stairs that you can see between? forget it! optical illusion and vertigo set in something fierce with that kind of visual scare.

that's a really nice way of thinking about it! = )

>>> The worst elevators are the ones with no windows and funny noices... eeeeek!<<<

the creaks, lurches and other old elevator emissions can be upsetting to say least. ever been in way old elevators in old, old bldgs? the kind where maybe three ppl fit and you close the folding gate across the entry yourself...

>>>I would prefer climbing a rope outdoors :-) (not really)<<<

that climbing rope is sounding better and better = )

I'm scared of stairs too!!!

I wrote a post above about an experience I had recently where I was walking down stairs in high heels and my co-worker noticed how shaky I was. I'm not really scared of heights, just tripping and falling down the stairs. It good to know I'm not the only one.

-T

P.S. I'm also scared of escalators. Weirdly enough, I'd take an elevator any day over stair or an escalator.

Doesn't matter if they are steep or narrow, cobbled or carpeted; I never feel I can walk with confidence that I will stay upright when I climb stairs.
Or upwards or descending them.
Elevators just make me feel urpie.

I used to be TERRIFIED of elevators when I was younger (early 90s) before most people had cellphones.

But not so much anymore. I'll skip riding in an old elevator still, but overall I don't worry much anymore. At worst, I'm in for a hour or so wait until the firemen get here and let me out. No big deal.

and those stupid science shows on discovery channel that talk about the sun burning out. why even show that to people, huh? to cause chaos and disorder? i feel ready to run the streets naked (even moreso than normally, ok) when i think about that stuff.

and rain. that still frightens me. i've alwayus been terrified of it. when i was young, i'd scream at my mom (from the safety of the porch of course) screaming "mom!!!!! it's raining! you HAVe to come inside" to this day, if i'm driving and it rains, i get terrified. and to look outside and see or hear rain, makes my belly hurt so bad. not sure why i'm so scared of the rain though. i'd love to find out why (maybe when my sister used to lock me outside naked growing up (and they say i'm mean!) it was raining and freaked me out?

and those blasted shopping carts still get my heart pounding.

I had an unreasonable preoccupation with being kidnapped from the age of 5 until I was about 15 or 16. I am still scared of that, but have developed a much stronger fear of being a victim of home invasion. I think I might need to stop watching all these FBI Drama shows on TV.
