Dyslexia

What do you all know about dyslexia? One of my profs thinks I might be dyslexic, and I'm wondering how I get tested, what's involved in the test, and how it would effect the rest of my life

I'd say find out about any learning center or study center at your school, then perhaps they can help you and/or refer you
I imagine they can teach you skills to deal with it
Good luck

I just got back from talking with a counsellor here at the school and I have to go through a doctor who will then refere me to a psychologist, which I will have to pay for. Why would I have to go to a doctor first? What kinds of things will he do?

I don't know Gee, maybe a medical rule out, you know to make sure nothing is physically wrong with you that might make school work more difficult? I know I had to get thyroid function and blood sugar tests before I got on meds for depression/anxiety...maybe it's just common procedure?

Its unfortunate that you have to pay, usually if they catch these things early on in school it is covered by the school, I think anyway. The doctor will probably try to rule out anything medical and then the psychologist will spend hours with you, maybe even broken up between 2 appointments, asking you questions, testing your general knowledge, (ie who is such and such a person- some historical figure), they will test your emmory skills (ie. give you 5 numbers to repeat, then come back to you LATER, and ask you to tell them the numbers), they will give you puzzles to see how fast and accurately you can do them, and there will be a few math components. It will be much more detailed than that of course, but thats an idea. It is worth doing it, if you are dyslexic and you get it assessed they can help you to find the appropriate study techniques etc. It can only improve things, IF you follow their suggestions.

Good luck and dont worry about the testing! I think you even get to draw pictures ; )

Legwarmers and Sleepy,

Thanks. I'm kinda scared when it comes to all of this. I dont' know why, and I know there is no reason to be, but I still am.

Legwarmers, thanks for letting me know what they might do. And Sleepygirl, thanks for info.

I don't know if they will find anything. My mom worked really hard with me when I was younger to help me understand everything. She "taught" me phsyics 11 when I didn't understand what was going on. And she taugh me math for years because I didn't understand my teacher. Oh and she taught me how to write essays and everything like that. Why did I go to school? Huh...

They might find that you have some kind of learning disabilty, and whatever they find, it will help you in the future, your school should then give you accomodation etc.
from what you posted, it sounds like you have a different learning style, maybe you are spatial? visual? there are a lot of people like that, who struggle through school because of learning styles that do not work with the standard methods. Do you learn by doing or watching or discussing? Can you get a tutor?

I'm looking into getting a tutor.

I have no idea how I learn. There has never really been one way that sticks out more for me than the others. I've done those learning style quizes and I think it said I was... oh I can't remember.

I think dyslexia has to do with seeing letters and numbers backwards or something like this. It makes reading hard to do. Google dyslexia. Fondly, Philipa
