Getting scareder and scareder

Posted by Dinah on February 25, 2006, at 11:57:25

About having to move. I don't see much improvement on the local job market that would enable us to stay if my husband's job moves.

On the other hand, I'm a bit afraid of staying too. They announced locally that they're likely to call for evacuations even for tropical storms this year, because lots of people are in trailers and they're not sure of the readiness of the levee system to withstand even a tropical storm.

I've been here all my life except for a couple of years in Utah that I'm almost too young to remember. I'm probably no more than ten miles from where my parents brought me home from the hospital. My family roots are here. My great grandfather and my father are in the same tomb.

I don't want to leave my home and my job and my son's school and my therapist and everything I've always known for my entire life.

But I'm a wee bit worried that they don't think the floodwalls can stand up to a tropical storm, too.

My husband doesn't care. He's lost his entire family in the last year and has no ties to here.

My son is terrified of moving.

so it's your husband's job that might be relocated? Geez Dinah, I'm sorry. When will you know, and do you know where you'd be heading?

I know what you mean about "home". I think I'd really feel out of place anywhere else, and there is my therapist, pdoc, a few friends, and just everything that is familiar. There's a whole new life created in moving.

We'll find out mid April. :( Never has six to eight weeks seemed so long.

There's a short list of cities, one of which is here, one is close enough that I could continue to work at my job, telecommuting and coming in once every week (and see my therapist once a week), and two are too far away to keep seeing my therapist or probably do most of my work. I could do a bit by completely telecommuting, but not all of it.

And only one of the possibilities other than here has schools I'd really be excited about.

Sounds like it's not all negative and you might like a new beginning. Fondly, Phillipa

No. I hate new beginnings. In anything.

As afraid as I am of further levee or floodwall breaches, and losing everything I have, it still seems better than moving. Moving feels like the end of the world.

At least till my son is out of school and I retire. I see the advantage of not being extremely old in a place where you have to pick up and evacuate every few years. Probably more often now, even after this extremely chancy season.

I always say I'm pathologically stable. Same guy over twentyfive years, same job over twentyfive years, same house fourteen years, same city forty plus years, same therapist nearly eleven years now.

I hope one of the places with schools you'd be excided about is here!

I know what you mean about "home" - people don't understand why I love this place as much as I do. But it's home.

Though if you end up here, the locals are really friendly.

The only possibility (other than here) with schools I'd be excited about is Houston. :)

I'm glad the locals are still friendly to us. :)
