Just playing devils advocate here....but maybe he was 'saved' but it....I dont know. I am not really aware of how much he publicly chants about it etc but it could be a useful tool for some?? Why am I even posting this Im not sure...because I dont agree with all that stuff, I am a little anti drugs at times but i take them so?? But I guess I need to be able to see both angles....I dont like that people get 'programed' into such places...and Im ignorant to scientology but what if it helps people? just......what if?? you know? ALthough NOW I am going to read up on it because Ive just posted this :-)

I think Scientologists actually believe that evil aliens (they call them "Thetans") live among us. They really are a bizarre cult. I loved Brooke Shields' response to Tom's criticism of her use of medication to treat her post-partum depression. She replied that he should stick to saving the world from aliens and let the doctors treat their patients.
I can't stand him anymore either. He really made a huge mistake firing his publicist. He's going to end up doing himself in with his arrogance and stupidity. He needs managers who can save him from himself. Spielberg and the studio behind his latest move are said to be very concerned about his behavior lately. They're afraid it's going to hurt the box office draw for their new movie "War of the Worlds" coming out soon. We can only hope....

I just read the whole interview. How obnoxious. Matt did a good job except for a couple of times where he placated Cruise by telling him how knowledgable he is on the subject. How knoweldgable my *ss! He doesn't even know the difference between psychotropic medications in general and antipsychotics. He uses the latter term to mean all psychotropic medications. He's a moron and his attitute that he's the only one who knows anything is insufferable. I'll never pay to go to one of his movies ever again. I hope that the more he shoots off his big mouth, the greater the backlash against him.k

Your thoughts ARE valid. I always like reading what you contribute. It's usually pithy and thought-provoking...or funny when that's the tone of the thread.... :-)
I hope everyone's thoughts and opinions here are valid.
If you think someone isn't being civil and you want to bring that to their attention, well, go ahead.
Differing points of view are extremely important here - to me at least. Makes for good discussions and learning experiences, most times, I think.

My concern is that someone who never finished high school, and who also has dyslexia is speaking about his reviewing the research and forming his opinions, and then sharing them with the world as facts.
I certainly don't believe that you must finish high school and be free from a learning disability in order to be a critical reader of scientific material, but, um, there are lots of folks who seem more skilled in this ability to discern the meaning of experimental results than I would assume Tom Cruise is.
Decent actor, big movie star, certainly. Research expert? Hardly.

Clearly, individuals have the right to religious freedom. Equally clear is that lack of education and/or a learning disability, be it dyslexia or ADHD, do not in and of themselves render an individual unintelligent. Throughout history there have no doubt been many accomplished and successful people who perhaps did not finish high school and/or, as a result of life circumstances, were not able to go to university. I do not judge a person based on their religion, nor to I judge a person on their level of education. IMO, although Tom Cruise has linked his distaste and distrust of psychiatry and psychotropic meds to his religion of choice, scientology, it is not, IMO, his linking his opinions to his relgion that makes him repugnant, it is the reckless and incompassionate way he has chosen to make those opinions, which seem to be completely unsolicited, so public. There are other famous people who have adopted scientology as their religion, including John Travolta and Kirstie Alley, yet I don't seem to recall them or others publicly denouncing a branch of medicine, nor do I see them chiming in and voicing similar opinions to Tom Cruise, and demeaning those in society who have, or have had, to use pychotropic meds.
For me, it is sad that someone would use not just their celebrity, but also their religion to berate, criticize and demean not only a profession, but also a segment of society who, without that profession, probably would not be alive today, leading productive lives. So, I just have this message for Tom: It is highly unlikely that a pdoc is going to give you acting tips or ridicule and demean your chosen profession. Show phychiastrists, and the people they treat, the same courtesy and respect.

I want to apologize for my post about Tom Cruise and his dyslexia. I still think he's underqualified to interpet scientific data, but that's more because he's never been trained to, not because of his disability.
I don't think my post was very sensitive to those who have a learning disability or may not have finished high school. I'm sorry for any hurt my prior post may have caused.

Our local newspaper had a ONE PAGE ARTICLE today about treatment of post-partum depression efficacy with therapy and medication versus hormonal therapies, and amino acids/natural therapies.
I was very encouraged to see psychiatry and psychotherapy endorsed in the media like this. I, for one, hope that TC's media rampage backfires on him bigtime. It's an outrage against all of us who have been helped by medication and therapy.
Maybe he shouldn't let his sister be his publicist??

I'd like to see what he says the first time someone who is seriously ill goes off their meds, following their favorite star's advice, and then commits an act of violence to self or others. Or are kicked out of their residence for behavior reasons, and wind up homeless.
I am all for freedom of religion, and the guy is entitled to his beliefs, but it seems like the abuse of a powerful relationship. He has a relationship with his fans. And the words of famous people really do impact some people. That's why politicians have used actors and singers in campaigns.
I fear that his anti-psychiatry comments could have some serious repercussions.
