Sorry - meant to copy my adventures here too!!!

Posted by NikkiT2 on April 25, 2005, at 16:25:45

I have very impressive hemorrhiods *LOL*

Well, thats what the doc said!

I FINALLY had my colonoscopy / gastroscopy tis morning.. the drugs they gave me were great *L* and only now really wearing off..

I only remember small snatches of it all.. don't remember any of the insertions which is the part I was really worried about.. and only vaguely remember being sick all over the pillow when they removed the tube for the gastroscopy.. did wake up briefly to see some pictures of my insides which was pretty cool (I like that kind of thing!)

Up shot is.. they're still not sure what is going on.. the neck of my stomach is very irritated, so they took some biopsies to see if they could get an idea..
I have some lesions in my colon (not cancer related they're pretty sure) which have been biopsied too (could be related to very long term heavy ibuprofen use and abuse).. But *L* I apparently have a very impressive collection of internal hemmorhoids going "all the way up" (not sure what all the way up means, but I was too whacked out to really ask), and there is obviously a reason for them. A couple of the larger ones (I woke briefly to be shown one of those.. it looked HUGE on the screen is all I know *L*) were cauterised there and then I think he said..

So, the upshot is, I now have a scan being scheduled, and another appointment with the gastrologist.. Who knows when they will be!!!

All in all, the day of "prep" is a damned site harder than the actual procedure, but hopefully that alone will have helped me out a little!

Sorry I've not been around.. been sulking and fed up with all of this!!

Believe it or not, I'm getting pressure to have that done as well. The gastroenterologist today was really pushing for it because my mother had polyps. I told him I'd need a better reason than that.

They're going to start with a CT scan. I'm ok with that I guess. But I'm holding firm on the colonoscopy. It doesn't sound like it was that bad for you though? I've been hearing horror stories about the preparation for it.

No, not going to do it. Can't even stand the thought of doing it. He says they'd give me drugs for the procedure. Heck, they'd have to start the drugs the moment I agreed to do the test, take care of all the preparations when I was out cold. And while they were at it, they could leave me under until the gas was gone.

Maybe you could get virtual colonoscopy? It's non-invasive. They pump you up a bit with air, and use a CT scanner.

I hope everything comes out all right, health wise.

I had the oral-route scope done, and I thought it was great watching it all on the monitor. I don't remember feeling a thing. I had the barium up the other way, on a tilt table. Whoa, that was a lot of fun. Not.

I can hardly wait for the snake.

I think someone mentioned that was available...

It looks like something I'd dump my brand new gi doc for if he doesn't offer it. It might be a workable alternative, at that.

Thanks. :)

Seriously Dinah, it wasn't all that bad.. It was alot worse thinking about it all than the actual 2 days..

the prep isn'y huge fun.. the not eating for 24 hours was the hardest.. I poo'ed ALOT, but didn't get stomach cramps, and they gave great advice on how to prevent other problems (like using vaseline as a barrier cream on your anus to prevent "ring burn".. worked a dream!), and I simply stocked up on some magazines to keep near the loo all day!

The test itself, like I said, I barely noticed *LOL*

Feeling really low today though.. but I know sedatives often have this affect on me.. I'll perk back up again in no time!

And it was a piece of cake.

The good news was no polyps (she's 74) - she came out 'clean as a whistle.'

She was, of course, taking xanax during the prep. Mom loves her xanax.

My daughter watched one, too, and said it didn't look all that bad.

Sometimes I look at the 2K board and want to post to you. I've been too shy to email you - 'cause it would seem too much like prying for even looking.

It is really good to see you here, too.

dinah, my mother in law aka 'She Who Loves To Complain' is 89 and had it done and said it was a breeze. Now i know you're thinking, 'no, that's not possible' but it happened. Not a peep out of her. Of course she was stoned but even after that she never uttered a word about it. I do understand your position on this tho.
so to speak.

lol. Yes, I understand.

My therapist went to training last week. (Sigh.) He came back with a new theory about me. Something about sexual anorexia that he hasn't had time to fully explain to me yet. He thinks the refusal to have the colonoscopy done is part of my sexual anorexia. I guess I need to read the book (which I own) because I'll bet he's going to be saying everything is related to my sexual anorexia, whatever that is. :)

Anyway, I'm not saying he's wrong although I'm not sure what he's saying. But the idea of being... Oh never mind. I'd need a trigger warning for sure.

Which was actually my first guess based on the type and location of pain.

They did the CAT scan, and my regular internist called me within hours to give me the good news!

She couldn't believe I wasn't in more pain.

So now instead of scopes, I get strainers! Hooray!

Ah, does this mean they're going to wait for you to pass them? Because that hurts like hell apparently. See if you can have them do extra-corporeal shock wave lithotripsy. Even a nephrolithotomy might be preferrable to passing them. I hope you don't wish you'd had a colonoscopy ...

I don't see the urologist until Wednesday. So I guess he'll discuss options then.

It's been hurting, for periods lasting an hour to a lot longer to a lot shorter. I guess it'll get worse. My doctor offered me pain pills.

I still like this better. Colonoscopy. Iiiick.

geez that's a boo hoo and a wooo hoo all in one. On the one hand thank god the colonoscopy is not necessary (ok some would say you should have it done at 40 routinely) and on the other hand boo hoo with the passing stones. I've heard it's a nightmare for men...not sure what the deal is for women. Guess we'll find out from you. Keeping fingers crossed that it's marginal (although that whole 'do you want some pain pills' message is a yikes.

Dinah,
I'm sorry you're in pain and that you have to do ANYTHING -- even though straining may be better than "coloning." What is the best way to treat these? Thru meds or ultrasonic vibrations?

I hope the treatment is quick & painless.
take care!

Maybe I should ask for a pain pill or two

Since she leaves Fri afternoon each week and doesn't come back till Monday. And I am probably not going to go to the ER for pain. I'm afraid of sick people. So if the inevitable happens over the weekend... Well, maybe I'll call tomorrow and see if I can get just one or two. :(

Other than that, I just wait till Wednesday, by which time maybe it'll be all over? I know nothing about these things. I haven't had any acute pain since last Saturday, but the CAT scan was Wednesday and it was still there then.

Oh well. Que sera sera. And thank heavens for my dissociative pain blocking skills.

The last pain was the Saturday before last. The CAT scan was Wednesday. There's no way it disappeared.

But as long as it's not bothering me, I'll let it alone too.
