Jane:

Yes, I'm lost. But that's beside the point. Depending on your time zone, I missed ya. When I signed on, I was all alone (and scared). How 'bout we try to set up times in advance? I suppose this isn't an original idea.

Ron,
I saw this thread on Newbies, but I couldn't reply there because I am not a greeter.
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/newbs/20040812/msgs/395947.html

I just wanted to say I admire your restraint in your response. And also aha! I knew I recognized your name from somewhere, but I guess I'd blocked out our last meeting. :)

I never responded to your last post to me because you were unable to reply at the time, and it didn't seem fair to keep a dialog going with someone who couldn't respond.

I'm glad you are back and it seems like you are more comfortable here. That's nice to see.

Be well!

I am not a greeter but have replied to posts on Newbies hoping to offer support. Was I wrong to do that?

Dunno for sure, but tried to post a response there once and was told I was no longer considered a newbie and therefore could not post.

Ron, (and anyone interested in "open" chat room)
Sure, we can do that.
I'm in Eastern time.
I know some of the posters are not in the US, but most are.
So.....
How about...
between 9pm & 11pm Eastern
that is 8pm & 10pm Central
that is 7pm & 9pm Mountain
that is 6pm & 8pm Pacific
for starters.

NO ONE NEED BE SCARED, worried, or otherwise intimidated by the concept of "open", which is simply a chat room.
I am patient and willing to coach, teach, learn, wait, and be honest with whomever is interested in trying Open chat.

It is an opportunity for more direct communication, familiarization, private conversation is possible, a challenge/goal, lots of benefits in participation.

If enough interest I am willing to establish another time frame also.

Any questions, comments.... feel free.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm feeling better - new AD, divorce is final, social life improving and learning a lot from the posts on these boards. I reply if I think I have something useful to add. Otherwise, I keep practicing a valueable social skill; keeping my big mouth shut.

I've gotten some very nice feedback, like yours, from others, and it seems I'm making more new friends.

I'll have to go back and look at my last post to you and see if it has any merit whatsoever.

Ron

Ron, thank you!

Ron,

Thanks for answering that apostrophe question! I was quite frustrated that I was unable to respond on the newbie board. As you may recall, I feel passionately about the apostrophe. Thanks for your help!

MH:

No problem. I know how passionate you are about the language. I DON'T know why I could respond on newbie and others couldn't. I'm curious - along with your passion for English usage, do you enjoy some of the language's contradictions and word play in general? Some very clever comedians have pointed out some interesting things, such as:

Why is abbreviation such a long word?

Why is the word phonetic spelled with a "ph"?

Of course there are many more that I can't remember at the moment.

Regards,

Ron

Oh, yes, I love all stuff like that. Wish I could remember all those witty observations or even be clever enough to think of some of my own!

By the way, here's a recent "saying" I saw on the back of a pick up truck this morning (I live in Virginia). I was crying so hard from laughter by the time I reached work, I had two coworkers ask me what they could do to help!

"Southern Born, Southern Bread, and when I die, I'll be Southern Dead."

Of course I wanted to report this immediately to the language authorities, but alas, there are none :)

I don't know what the problem is/was but that's what happened to partly cloudy and ron1953 also, I believe. Perhaps they'll tell us what occurred for them.

Not at all! But after a while, you won't be considered a newbie anymore...

Hi Sabrina,
I literally cannot post on the Newbies board. Just like those who are new eventually cannot once a certain period of time has passed. Old-timers, for lack of a better word, who sign up to greet newcomers, are allowed to post. I'm not signed up to be a greeter, but I do look at the Newbies board occasionally.
