a question for smokers

Posted by octopusprime on September 26, 2004, at 12:17:37

do you find that you can track your moods by cigarette consumption?

i have been smoking more, much more. i used to be very regimented ... i would buy a pack exactly once every two days. i would be alloted 10 cigarettes a day. if i smoked 12 on the first day, i could only smoke 8 on the second. this worked for a while.

now i have thrown the rules out the window. i smoke what i want, when i want. this is getting expensive but i feel so restless and helpless i don't know what to do except have a smoke. it grounds me for 5 minutes. and i like smoking.

i know it's not depression that i'm tracking, it's on the other end. the restless of mania that causes me to do this ...

anybody else?

ps - i will consider entreaties to quit only from people that can beat me on the 10 km bike ride and the 400 stairs i climbed yesterday :p

I could never tell you to quit. I hated it when well meaning folk, especially those who had never smoked, would patronize me by saying, it's soooo easy, just don't do it. Yeah right!! My decision to quit was because my husband no longer smoked, my up coming wedding, and at the end of the list I guess, myself. I still miss it everyday. I didn't really want to give up, I just knew I had to. The point I am trying to make though, is that my smoking habits were very definitaly influenced by my mood and depression. I went through so much turmoil and what felt like terrible trauma when I gave up that I did a lot of research for encouragement.

These questions stood out to me. "What is the one very thing that never leaves your side, no matter what mood you're in, whether you are happy or sad? What is there for you, no matter what?" Naturally answer is cigarettes. The outcome to this question was that when quitting you are actually losing a best friend and you have to bury this friend and mourn it. That made things and the my frantic, sometimes chain smoking a little easier to understand. When I felt okay, even happy, I would smoke. And enjoyed it. When I was down, sad, depressed, in a bad mood etc etc. I smoked. And enjoyed it. And NEEDED it.

I identify clearly with what you are saying. I would still be smoking if my H hadn't quit.

Enjoy a ciggie for me octopusprime!

Regards
Sabrina

Well meaning folk. Right. Sanctimonious in my book.

Stranger: Didn't your mother tell you smoking is bad for you?
Me: Didn't your mother tell you talking to strangers is bad for you?

I wrote a similar post on this a while back. I found that its definitely an anxiety related thing. Someone told me once, "yeah, its a crutch, but its a good crutch."
BTW, I recently quit. My meds were making me naseous and I couldn't tolerate a cig. By the time that was taken care of, I realized I had gotten past all the withdrawals and just stuck with it. Plus, I lost my job and didn't have the money to buy them. Its not the first time I quit, but I feel pretty good about it this time. I think I still associate the nausea with cigs.
There's plenty of worse things out there than smoking. I hate the self rightous idiots who think they need to tell others how to live their lives. I mean, who knows what 'their' crutch is!
