Jai - are you hurt? Please take care. Ankles are bad things to hurt - they seem to have so many parts to them.

Please take care,

See, this is the advantage to living on a big flat, mostly paved island: no mountains. How did it happen, Jai? And what's the prognosis? I hope the break wasn't too bad (not that any broken bone is good, mind you). Ta. ;) Atticus, Lord of the Asphalt

This is the story. I was walking up to the top of a mountain to watch the bird migration. We were making good time. I took my eyes from the rocky, root infested, uneven path and when I opened my eyes I was looking at the mud real close. I thought gosh I've never had such a close up look at this earth. Then the pain hit....I never knew I could swear like that...
I couldn't swear enough. I had on a new powder blue jacket. I was rolling in the mud all over that pretty thing. My ankle was screaming with sharp pain. Then I realized I had broken my glasses, torn my tights, ripped my upper lip and hurt my knee.
I swore for quite a while. I can't repeat the words as I would be banished for weeks and weeks... All the swearing didn't do me a lick of good.
What took 10 minutes of walking into the woods took one hour of hobbling out. People passed us and didn't even ask what had happened or if they could help. It was obvious that my upper lip was bleeding.
That shocked me.

I went to the Doc today and he said the end of my bone broke off. So he fitted me with a boot and booted me out the door. come back in 5 weeks....we'll see.

Thanks you all for being so caring.
I am humbled by the way people on the mountain were so oblivious...

Of course I am wondering what is the lesson in this injury.

Doing simple things, getting up in the middle of the night....
So incredibly difficult.
But I love my boot, it's in stylish grayish-green.
I told the Doc I wanted to wear it while I go hiking....

ps (Atticus, I bet I could trip on uneven pavement)

I'm so sorry for your painful experience, Jai. You described it so well. I don't know what's with people sometimes. It's so sad that no one asked if you were okay or offered to help when they could see that you were hobbling and bleeding.
I injured my foot recently, and gosh, I was so limited in what I could do. Do you have someone to help you, I hope?

Cass, what happened to your foot?
The person taking care of me is my bubby, he was there when the long trek back happened. He was covered with mosquitos. It looked like they were waiting in a landing pattern to get to his skin.
Right before I fell we were talking about Dangue fever and how it has just shown up in SanFrancisco. It's mosquito born.
So all the way back to the car I was rubbing off the mosquitos that just picked this day and opportunity to bite us.

I hope you feel better.
I want to know more about your wound.

<<< I've been doing international folk dances for most of my life and a couple of years ago, I was leading a Bulgarian Pravo, slow and sedate, and I jammed my foot on an uneven surface in such a way that it has been a struggle for the whole two years. Those seven little meta-tarsile bones had tore away from their foundations, and were only going back if stayed completley off my feet, period. Never happen. I'm a jogger and I play Tennis, but not for two years now. My butt feels flabby to me now.

<<< I toooo got a foot brace, but I wrapped it with extra Velcro strips and voila, a week later I was walking (with a severe limp)! I do hope your ankle is only a two or three month ordeal. the last two years really have sucked for me. Dancing is my passion-passtime and I miss the showing-off I do ('cause I'm good at it!)

Yours, limpingly, Rod

Jai, I'm so sorry about your foot! It's scary, falling on your face like that, isn't it? many years ago, I was going hiking with my brothers and there was this really steep part of the trail well, thinking that it would help, I ran down it. Well, at the end I couldn't stop running and I fell really hard and rolled a bit even into some bushes. My glasses fell off, my barretts fell out, and every part of my body was scraped. Especially two deep gashes on my leg. All I could do was lie there and yell for someone to come get me out of there.

Jai, I can just imagine your pain, and I am glad you are going to be well taken care of.

Angela

P.S. glad you like your boot!

You wouldn't be the first person to trip on uneven sidewalk slabs. My brother did it once and broke his collarbone. And ripped his expensive lawyer's suit. And scuffed up his expensive lawyer's loafers. He may make fun of my Harley boots, but they've got a tread on them as thick as a car tire's; pretty damned hard to take a header in these, especially since they're weighted with the steel toes. Anyway, speedy recovery! I have to do my bird watching on the Discovery Channel, unless I'm in the mood to observe pigeons. ;) Atticus

Yowch. And on your way to see bird migration no less. That's the pits. Okay, so maybe it's not so smart of me to bury my nose in the trail maps and guides while hiking along those root and rock infested paths.

> Then I realized I had broken my glasses, torn my tights, ripped my upper lip and hurt my knee.
> I swore for quite a while. I can't repeat the words as I would be banished for weeks and weeks... All the swearing didn't do me a lick of good.

Yowch. Quite a nasty fall.

That shocks me too. Usually I think of hikers as being friendly to each other. I'm sorry you had that experience on top of your injuries.

> Of course I am wondering what is the lesson in this injury.

Maybe that it's good to keep one eye on the next step in front of you to keep you on track until you reach your goal. I mean in terms of achieving life goals. This is my attempt at being philosophical :).

Oh goodness, Jai. I'm so sorry about your fall. And I can't believe people passing you didn't at least make sympathy noises if not offer help. What an ordeal.

Could it be the moon? I fell on the stairs at home the day before yesterday. Mostly just bruised my pride, but I was kind of achy the next day. And on Thursday a picture frame fell off the shelf in a discount store and landed square on my big toe. Open toed shoes no less. It's a lovely shade of green/blue now. I should try to find nail polish to match for the other toesies. :-)

Sending out healing energy to you. (ever want to do this "return receipt requested? :)

Take care,

You accident with the stairs sounds scary and the toe accident bizzare.. but painful none the less. I think a toe injury is so painful...even compared to my ankle break. Toes are hot wired to our pain center.

Bird Migration? Were you at Audebon Ranch?

I can trip on flat pavement. Seriously - I was changing planes in Tokyo once and tripped on flat carpet getting off the first plane. Broke the ankle. Of course I didn't know it was broken because I didn't go to a doc until I got home.

Never mind how inept the airline staff was. I did at least get a whole row to myself on a very full flight.

And the boot was wonderful (do you have the air pump one?) After a few days to a week I was getting around pretty good. I took my daughter to London and Poland while I was wearing it, and it got me to the front of all the lines at Disney!

I'm sure you'll feel better in no time.

**I'm getting me a set of those boots. the stylish gray green boot I'm sporting now cost me $250 and it's only one boot! As I put the boot on I asked the nurse if insurance would cover the cost...she said, " well sometimes we have to fight for payment".
My jaw dropped open.

Hi Jai,

My injury was much less dramatic than yours. It was a silly, strange accident. I was just walking along on an uneven surface and twisted my foot sharply. It was only sprained, but oh god did it hurt. I went to the ER because I thought it must be broken. Anyway, I had to wear a special shoe for awhile and use crutches. It's all better now, but every once in awhile I feel a little tinge of pain.

How are you doing?

My brother is six years younger. I think he'd die before he put on a leather jacket. When he dresses "casually," he's usually wearing Docksiders and beige Dockers (I think it's the only color he owns) and a button-down dress shirt (usually light blue) minus the tie and open at the neck. In other words, he dresses just like my 64-year-old dad.
I wouldn't recommend Harley-Davidson motorcycle boots for mountain-climbing, though. They're really designed to serve as the third and fourth "tires" of a motorcycle as needed for balance or in stop-and-go traffic. They're very comfortable and durable, but pretty heavy. And they ain't cheap, but they are very well made. They're certainly less expensive than your mega-boot, though.
We do have hawks all over the city. There are aeries hidden among the cornices and gargoyles of a lot of the older buildings. I've mostly only seen the hawks when they ride the thermals in the open space over Central Park. I've never seen one swoop from a building perch, and certainly never witnessed one take a pigeon, although I've read it happens all the time. New York City pigeons just couldn't be any fatter, dumber, or slower. I've actually seen one run over by a taxi because it got a little too cocky about getting out of the cab's way. Oh, by the way, was that your first PBC the other day? I seem to rack up one about every three weeks. I'm about due. Ta. ;) Atticus

Holy Wah!!!
Any kind of injury sucks, but the ones that immobilize, and HURT so bad, our extremities are surely the worst.
Best wishes for speedy recovery. Of course, you'll have to behave yourself for that.

In the "me too" category:
- sliced into my left hand, diagonally across the index finger/hand knuckle with a machete
- had my two horses step on and break my two baby toes three days apart; my son says I walked around like I had a corncob up my *$$ for the next few weeks
- slipped off an icy porch step landing on my vertical right foot, snapping my big toe bone in two diagonally
- dropped a car battery, corner first, on my second toe, right foot and busted it to smithereens from the second knuckle out (this one was three weeks after breaking the big toe)

and heaven only knows the falls, scrapes, dives off of horses, slammed fingers in doors, et cetera because I am a world-class KLUTZ.

Does any of this make you feel better? Even just being able to laugh at my bozocity?

Well, take care of yourself.
just plain clumsy

sprains can be damaging to the tendon. If the tendon gets stretched out then more sprains can happen. I too had a number a strains on my ankle for years. Last summer I fell down 4 times in a row on a gravel road. 4 times! I was undone.
So be careful....I guess we need to wear lace up slippers? Maybe ankle supports all the time?
I never want to do this again.
there are way too many uneven surfaces everywhere.
I am cranky to day. I hope this is a good sign. I am dropping, spilling and making errors in judgement (like bumping my foot on the keyboard) on the physical level. I'm on my 4th day of no exercise or going outside. I may have cabin fever. The day is sunny and beautiful. the sun has that lovely golden color and the trees are turning red, yellow and orange. Stunning.
thanks for asking.
