I have a hook in my ceiling

Posted by cubic_me on September 22, 2004, at 17:01:25

I've come back to university and moved into a new room. There is a hook in the ceiling. I doubt it would hold my weight, but having it there makes me think about suicide maybe even more than I would otherwise.

Taking it down would involve making a hole in the ceiling, and would be hard to explain.

What should I do with it?

PS I wouldn't actually use it, it just triggers my thinking.

Hang a philadendron on it and...

...water it regularly. Name the plant. Make it a friend.

Or if you're like me, get a plastic plant so you don't have to feel responsible for it.

I would hang something very silly from it, like a sock. When anybody asks why it's there, just look up and say, oh that's where that went. You could change it once and awhile: Christmas stocking, Valentine hearts, etc.

or you can buy some filler stuff at home depot and fill in the hole if you take it down or put some kind of decal over the hole or a poster. I would take it out if you really start to obsess about it

hoberman sphere! or maybe a rubber chicken

these things are hella cool!
http://www.hoberman.com/fold/main/index.htm

now i'm a mathematician by training and i was taking graph theory when i got this toy. depending on how you visualize this toy, it's a 4-regular planar graph on 10 vertices. when you visualize it that way, you can draw a diagram of all the lines on a flat piece of paper in such a way that the lines never cross each other. now that is cool :)

i was also a raver at the time, and i would take this toy to raves and stick it on the heads of people trippin on ecstasy. "it's like an alien helmet eating your brain, man" </stoner>

you can also fit a whole baby inside a big one of those. they like the whole big-small-big-small of it

so hoberman sphere!

ps - when i was in school i was also known to hang a rubber chicken on those hooks. but it dries out the little plastic nubs on the chicken mouths; you'll need a new chicken in a year or so.

All your ideas are great, I'd never have thought of them (I had only thought of a punch bag, and I don't think the hook would hold it). The hook is right above where I sit at the computer, and I've been looking up and viusalising every one of the ideas :)

At the moment a union jack knee high sock is hanging from the hook. When I find something else I like I'll swap it and let you all know.

Maybe I can get heavier and heavier items until the hook falls out!

Even though the hook is still there, when I see it I can think of what to put on it intead of any other uses. Thankyou!

Take out your agressions, and well if that wasn't quite enough to relax you...

You know, I was a bit hesitant to suggest a pinata. I was at a 4 year-old's birthday party this summer, and they had a clown pinata. Unfortunately, the string broke off of the clown's head where it had been attached, so the dad tied it around the clown's neck in order to re-hang the clown. We lynched a clown!!!!!

And to make matters worse, once it finally fell down for good, the kids were beating it to break it open. So it felt like we lynched and then beat the clown with sticks! And this is a city with racial tension involving the police force and African-American young men. It was surreal. And creepy.

Good thing there was candy and cake... Good for what ails ya.

Thanks :) (nm) 64bowtie

We hang swings from the hooks at my office. And when the kids aren't there, we will shoot the balls from the ball pit into the swings.

Ok, some days just get long and there are all these toys to play with. Why should the kids have all the fun!?

Well I must confess I've used that joke on babble before when I planned a Depression and co-morbid disorders party but forgive me..It's one I'm particularly proud of : )
Yeah beating and lynching a clown would be
a touch creepy, although I find clowns are creepy in themselves so maybe beating one with a stick would be kind of normal for me.

There's this 8 ft. tall, horrid looking clown-balloon thing in front of a flower shop in a neighboring town. I have to drive by that way often, and can't look. It's the creepiest thing ever. Stephen King's "It" forever ruined clowns for me years ago.

BTW - creepy is one of my all-time-favorite words.

Ya, I like creepy too, I also like *grotesqueties* but that one is homemade.
I do NOT understand how clowns are supposed to be cheerful or funny and I didn't even have to see "It"
