I don't think I belong here

Posted by saw on September 8, 2004, at 2:14:51

Hi Everyone

Thank you for all the support and answers to questions that I have received since joining this board about a month ago.

I don't feel that I belong here though. I don't seem to be able to fit in anywhere and starting a new thread generally stops after one, maybe two replies.

I don't really know what else to say, I know that I am feeling lonely and quite sad right now.

Thanks again for everything

Everyone, please take care.

Until another time
Sabrina

I'm sorry you feel that way. I felt that way in the beginning too, but now I don't let myself see it that way. I'd never been part of an online community before and I wasn't sure how it worked. Now I know that if I'm in trouble or need to discuss a specific problem there are people here who will jump in to help. I just had to remember that they can't read my mind! (I mean, geez, doesn't EVERYONE know what I'm thinking?) Just teasing.

Please hang around and post, post, post. Tell us what is important and people will share their experiences.

You are not alone!
best,
antigua

You know, I have heard the same thing said many times by new posters. It's unfortunate. We try to make everyone feel welcome, but there seems to be this kind of "breaking in" period that is hard for new posters to get through. I wish it didn't happen that way, and I really don't know why it does.

I know in my case, even though I have been posting here for just under a year, I still feel like a "thread killer" at times. I think many of us have that insecurity.

I'm sorry that I haven't gotten to know you. Can you tell us a little about yourself? I apologize if you have done that in other threads.

Let me tell you something about myself. I'm 38 and a grad student in psychology. I live in the midwest and like to garden..hence the name. I have atypical depression, and lately have been dealing with side effects from a med increase (I take Nardil).

Warmly,
gg

I felt that way, too, for a while.

Then I felt like I rubbed everyone the wrong way.

It happens. Take a busy board, put it with an insecure person (me) and there is a recipe for feelings of rejection.

The good news is you can keep butting in all you want and no one can look at you funny. Not like real life.

You're doing fine. I've been here a long time and I still feel like a thread-killer or a reject sometimes. Not every thread gets a bunch of replies.. try not to take it personally. It's difficult, I know. Sometimes it can feel better to just answer other people's threads, then you don't have that feeling of putting yourself out there so much.

You know I felt the same way when I first started posting. I don't know why. I think people just get involved with alot of threads, and the new name just doesn't stand out somehow. I do know I always read the posts from people I know first. Maybe that's it. Also, I for one tend to get consumed by my own problems, and then I only post and don't read anything else. But no matter what it is that causes it, people here will eventually notice you, and then you'll get all kinds of replies. I mean, look at this thread!
Anyway SAW, I hope you come back and give us another chance. We didn't ignore you intentionally.

You know, my intention was to read the replies (if any :-) ) and still not post anymore, but I feel quite warm and mooshy right now. All of your comments made me feel a lot more welcome. I am sorry to be so self-pitying. It is good to know that there are others who felt like that in the beginning. I promise to butt in lots and I promise TO TRY not take any distractions (for want of a better word) personally.

Thank you all so much - I feel less sad today.
Sabrina

So sorry you feel that way, Sabrina. I know that there are plenty of times when my threads die too. I was lucky in the beginning that after a few posts that went no where, all of a sudden one or two of them clicked. Otherwise, I probably would have given up too. Have you tried answering in threads that are already ongoing?
If you've already definitely made up your mind to leave, then I wish you well and I'm sad that it didn't work out for you.

Hi gg

Thank you for the offer to tell you a bit about myself. When you have time - there's a bit of my story.

Sabrina,
Your link worked great. You know, I remember reading that post and feeling such heartbreak for what you went through. I think your post came at a time when I was struggling with a depressive episode recently, and I wasn't responding to many posts at all.

I'm glad you are on medication. I'm so proud of you for taking the steps to turn things around. Things like a special man, and just the wisdom that comes with getting older and experiencing life are such a help, aren't they?

Keep on your forward path. I look forward to seeing you more on the boards. I'm glad you decided to stay.

Warmly,
gg

Sabrina, I'm glad you feel better today! Your posts have been nice to read and I've enjoyed interacting with you, so it came as a surprise to me to know you felt this way; I guess it's no surprise really though, as I think we all seem to feel bad OIAW.

I'm glad you decided to stay. I was just getting to know you when you responded to my thread. You said you would be there for me and I want to be there for you too. {{{{{{{SAW}}}}}}}

Thank you Angel Girl. How awful of me to offer my love and support and then try and run with my tail between my legs because of self-pity. I have picked my lip up off the ground. Thanks for the hug.

Sabrina
