the causes of mental illness (game)

Posted by lissa on July 28, 2001, at 11:39:06

This is just a game. I hope it's not offensive. How many causes can you come up for for mental illness? (they don't all have to be valid, just stuff you've heard/read about) ... here's my start:

oedipus, electra, your s--t-elimination style, the inheritance of the primitive thinking of aborigines, sinning, witchcraft, disordered thoughts, problems with delayed gratification, boundary issues, neurotransmitter problems, viruses, stress, the double-bind, cognitive distortions, child abuse, sexual abuse, repression, regression, discimination, menstruation, separation, attachment, failure-in-general, poor "reality testing", the suppression of your inner child, the suppression of your inner bitch, conservatism, liberalism, capitalism, alcoholism, narcissism, pessimism, magazine super-models, economic downturn, debts, "Learned Helplessness", "Fight or flight," treading the "borderline," poor coping skills, social ineptitude, inadequate sex -- and, of course, Mom.

lissa, what a great list, in my overanxious sense of thread continuation, ill add mine below...

not enough money, too much money, anomie, dis-connection, serotonin depletion, why didn't you teach me how to fight?, those kids are laughing at me, i dont understand, not enough attention, too much attention, loss of limb or disfigurement, i like to set things on fire, head trauma, 'i love you' does not last forever, too fat, too skiny, we will never be together, no job, have a job/hate job, dead father, dead mother, dead brother/sister (all other relations do not count, if you morn your grandmother's passing too long, you have waaaaaay too many problems, please stop reading this right now), sarcasm, too smart, too stupid, grocery store/bright lights/couples drifting through the isles complacently picking out items to return blissfully to their nesting complex known as an apartment, no girlfriend/boyfriend, got boyfriend/girlfriend either one is a psycho/jerk or psycho/bitch respectively, no one has ever loved you as much as you loved them, same song played over and over, 4 am/still cant sleep, what did i just say/im so stupid, the abuse of inocence, these drugs dont work, these drugs make you feel worse, pointless existance, how many rebirths until nirvana?, dont care, care too much, going on, and going on, and going on, and will never stop until the end when there is no more and no one will ever remember your name, sign on the dotted line, haha, the joke is on you sucker, life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it.

Crop dusting, insecticides, too many 12 step meetings. Group therapy..whoever invented that was a masochistic s.o.b. For the low, low price of $45.00 a week, you will have the privalege of spending 1.5 hours with a room full of people that you wouldn't normally associate with. The psychologist is making a grocery list on her legal pad. The only question I ask at every session is,"Why can't I talk about how many pills I swallowed today?" The only comment I hear every meeting,"Well Phil, You seem less bloated this week." They are lying, I know my face has swollen since last week. I'm definately shaving a larger surface area. What was the question again, lissa?

Phil,
you are funny :)

that's exactly the picture of a group therapy I had in mind when I rejected that option for myself.

So, how many have you swallowed today?

mila
P.S. thanks for the link to Solomon's site. I bought the book. Didn't like it, unfortunately. Too many metaphors before he starts telling his amazing stories. I saw Andrew on tv twice, he is great. But his metaphors are mismatching mine. I saw my depression as a despair of a sculptor over disfigured piece of marble, then the sculptor moved on to work on clay and Galatea was born. What is your story?

Okay I can get on the brother bandwagon:

Having an older brother, because
they'll use your baby carriage wheels to make a go-kart,
cheer you on when you start a fight with the neighbourhood bully instead of helping out,
steal $500s in Monopoly,
oogle your girlfriends when they start to develop,
make you laugh so hard that you pee your pants and then ask what happened,
make scary faces so bad that you scream for them to stop,
your friends get crushes on them then you don't know if they like you or your brother,
their friends are cute but out of bounds,
tell you to get lost once they reach puberty,
scare any normal boyfriends away when you reach puberty,
the list goes on and on and ...

Father preferred brother. Grandmother preferred cousin. Got hit too much by mother. Parents fought all the time. No models of expressing love, affection.
