binge eating

Posted by rockerr on September 1, 2016, at 18:57:36

hi. i have overcome a few addictions to substances and to relationships. cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana and an abusive relationship which very much was addictive. i did all this partly on my own, partly through therapy and some help from support groups.
this was all about 1 1/2 years ago, ive been abstinent since then.
however, i have gained a bunch of weight and binge eat almost every single day. my therapist tells me that he thinks its another addiction and i am self soothing w food. he is right.

im continuing to learn to deal w feelings. thats underneath all of this. i am scared though. my doctor (regular doc) told me i have really bad cholesterol and need to lose weight...and i have been binging almost daily. i am scared i wont get this under control or it will be too late when i do.

I'm very sorry this has become a problem for you. Substituting food for alcohol and drugs is, unfortunately, not that uncommon. Have you considered trying an overeaters anonymous group? I know they have a pretty good track record of helping people learn to stop binge eating. I know quite a few women who have gotten control of terrible binge eating problems, lost weight and been able to maintain a healthy weight.
Good luck to you.

I've tried it baseball....it felt rigid and overly religious
But I also can see how it could help...it just felt really
Annoying to listen to people talk about how they were saved by 12 steps

I sent a follow-up yesterday, but must not have clicked the send button. Anyway -
Yeah, I get you about OA. I go to AA and felt the same was at first, but was able to find meetings that were more to my liking. I don't know if OA has a lot of meetings in your area that you could check out.
I know OA proposes a diet without sugar or refined grains of any sort.
And, whether in OA or not, there's a lot to be said for having some people you check in with about this and to whom you feel accountable. With any addictive behavior denial and dishonesty are big issues - as in, I won't today, or maybe I will today but I won't tomorrow....

Hi Rockerr,

I am a recovered bulimic so I totally understand binge eating is emotional eating and it's an addiction.

I would't be comfortable in any type of group setting- it took me years to be able to talk to my therapist- add a bunch of other people and forget it. That said, do you think you could follow a diet if it was prescribed by your doctor and a nutritionist? Or something like Weight Watchers on-line where you just interact via the internet with no physical meetings?

Binge eating is a hard one to stop, because you can't stop all contact or intimacy with food. Maybe if you could binge on vegetables and salad-- there are ways of making them taste good, like adding low calorie dressing (you can even make one to your taste) or eating them with a little canned tuna-- or something else that give them flavor-- or on jello-- or even on lower calorie fruits, and coffee and tea-- or whatever-- Aside from substituting low calorie foods, it's means changing something about your life-- filling whatever need you're satifying in some other way.--

I stopped binge eating when I got into a long-term relationship and I know several others who had a similar reaction. But the latter can't be ordered up-- obviously. So the best you can do is try to exercise regularly at the gym and transfer your bingeing to foods that won't make you gain weight. It may be a slow process, but over time, you may find yourself preferring those foods anyway-- I do by now.

Alcoholism and binge eating have been associated with ADHD and ADD according to a recent study. It seems to be genetic, as even twin studies reveal this association. I would take this into consideration when dealing with a stubborn case of binge eating or alcoholism.

If you wanted to you could try metformin. It curbs appetite. However i think i am losing hair because of it. Because of the neuroleptics, i can either choose hair loss or overweight. My choice is hair loss.

You need regular kidney checks on it;)
