Hi everyone, my question is about going to the hospital. I've been battling a bad depression for months and I need to go or I'll have another suicide attempt. It is time to go but I don't know how. I live in Chicago so there is rush university which is supposed to be a good psych ward, do I just show up there? Do I call their number? Do i go to the emergency room?

I have never been to the hospital so advice would be appreciated.

I used to post on babble a lot with struggles with my therapist and you all helped me so much. Thank you for that help, and thank you for the advice on this issue.

My therapist always told me to go to the emergency room. But I'm not sure. Can your pdoc or therapist help you figure out the proper procedure?

Take care of yourself, Raisinb.

Thank you Dinah, I quit my therapist several months ago and don't have a pdoc right now, I'm confused about what to do but i better do something fast, I need to take care of my dog while I am gone and I can't get ahold of the people who board her.

Can you drop her off at your vets for the short term? She needs you healthy, and a few days at the vets won't harm her.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I called my mom and told her I was going to the hospital. She is coming to get Clementine and will take care of her. I am being admitted to the psych ward at Rush for a few days.

Good. So you went to the ER and they had a bed upstairs to admit you. I have been hospitalized a lot and generally you just go to the ER. If they have a bed upstairs, fine. If not, they look for a bed and send you somewhere that has a bed.

The hospital was good

I have never been hospitalized before, but it was a very good experience. The doctors seemed very smart, and everyone was caring.

It was a sobering experience, as I learned that I am more seriously ill than I thought. I thought I had occasional problems with depression, but it turns out I'm bipolar, with a side order of substance abuse problems. I wouldn't have accepted this diagnosis before, but after talking with the doctors and having everything explained in depth, I agree. It's a disorienting feeling. Many things make a lot more sense now, but its strange to have to reinterpret your life from a totally new framework. My attending said it takes an average of ten years--3.3 psychiatrists--to get an accurate diagnosis. That's just about me.

Anyway, thanks for the support. I haven't been on babble much in recent years, but I am so glad it's here.

So glad that you had a good experience. Sounds you landed at a very good hospital with caring professionals. Where do you go from here? Do you have a p-doc that you will continue to see?

Hi Annierose, yes, I have many people to follow up with. The doctors weren't stingy with treatment recommendations!

I'm glad it was a good experience. :) It's got to be a hopeful thing, to finally get the correct diagnosis.

I'm so glad you're safe. How's the pup?

Hi Raisinb,

Welcome back and kudos to you for making a great decision and taking such good care of yourself. That's often not easy when you are depressed.

Other than working through your new diagnosis, are you feeling better?

Lucie

Thanks Dinah. She had a wonderful time with my parents terrorizing their aging Rottweiler.

I'm much better than I was, though it's hard to say if it's an effect of being taken care of 24/7 by wonderful nurses and doctors, or if it's the new meds. Time will tell I suppose.
