Coming back to the Board after 6 years or so

Posted by allisonfly on May 27, 2010, at 20:39:40

Hi! I used to post on the psychology board of psychobabble all the time many years ago. I started to read some of your posts and I just wanted to introduce myself. You seem like a great group and I can identify with a lot of the issues here.

So, I have 10+ years in therapy with the same therapist, and I am completely 100% attached to her. At times it is really frustrating for me, at other times, I am more accepting of our relationship--that it has boundaries and has to be the way it is. Lately, I have been going thru a really difficult time (I have bipolar disorder) and I am in a partial hospitalization program right now. What is interesting to me is that I have a male therapist (an intern) who helped me with some suicidal thoughts today and suddenly now I am feeling all connected to him. Not like I am with my primary therapist, but still. It's amazing to me how it is such an ingrained pattern with me to fall for my therapist. Anyone else feel this way--that it is a pattern you keep repeating thru your life?

Well, I hope to post here more often and get to know you better!
Thanks--
Allison

So yours is a pattern of pushing people away, huh?! I do that too with friends and family, so I can understand. For some reason with therapists, I tend to want to pull them towards me...maybe it is in response to pushing everyone else away?

Thanks for responding and it is nice to meet you too!! :)

Welcome back, Allison. I think I'm getting to the same place about boundaries. It's nice, isn't it? I don't think I'll ever get good at attaching to other therapists. It's more remarkable that I attached to my therapist to begin with.

You might want to briefly post the fact that you changed your name on Admin. Dr. Bob asks that posters who change their posting name do that. It's not necessary to reveal your former posting name if you'd rather not. Just to say you used to post here under another name.

Hi Dinah,
Thank you so much for your message! I remember corresponding via this board many years ago. That's cool that we are coming to the same place about boundaries and I'm glad that you still have a good relationship with your therapist.

I will definitely get in touch with Dr Bob about my old name. I tried to update my registration under what I thought was my old name (this one--allisonfly) last night but it didn't work. Thanks for the info about it.

Hope to correspond more soon. :)

Hello allisonfly!

Welcome back!

I'm attached to my pdoc (who is also my T), but it has taken a long time for that to happen, years. I consider her like my second mom. I don't really have a pattern of attaching to therapists.

I do have a pattern of attaching to imaginary things, like my plush doll and to a certain extent that would apply to Dr. Bob as well. I attached to my hamster too.

Thank you! (nm) Dr. Bob

Thank you for your kind welcome back to the board. That's good that you don't have a habit of instantly attaching to therapists, I think. I know what you mean about the second mom thing. That is how I think about my T too, altho I have had romantic sorts of feelings for her as well. She is like a friend, a mom, a sister and a romantic interest all in one. Augh!!

About your attachment to imaginary things...and your hamster...well, that's kind of cute! And seemingly more appropriate! :)

Thanks again! Allison
