tried to contact former therapist to restart ;)(

Posted by surfergirl on June 9, 2009, at 23:57:56

Early last week I left a message with my former therapist requesting to restart therapy with him. I saw him for 3 years and "graduated" about 12 years ago. We were at an ending point then but left the door open. I saw him again briefly 2 years ago when I had cancer. I was not ready to restart full on therapy then even though I could have used it on one level, as I was focusing on the physical stuff.

I called him again today & left a message. Still no call back. I am worried about him, obsessing about my need for therapy, feeling a little rejected. This man knows more about my inner-workings than any other person...I am sad but still hoping to hear from him, even if it is to say "no"--no room in schedule, retired, won lottery, etc.

I am wondering if this is God's way of saying no...

That's very odd.

I don't think it's God's way of saying no, I think this is all about your former therapist.

I hope he answers this call.

That is strange since you know he's still in practice. I'm hoping he calls you soon. Please let use know if and when he calls back. Phillipa

Hope your T calls back. You know, many T's are on vacation around this time for some reason..so maybe your T is out.

Also, I suggest calling again. Sometimes answering machines/voice mails mess up. I would say "Hey T I am calling again to make sure you got my message, etc..."

Good luck.

Thank you all. I appreciate everyone's support so much.

I need to clarify just a little...he will always be my "therapist" & had many clients at the time he saw me. He was more skilled in deep healing of painful memories, inner work, integration for me than the preceding 3 or 4 PhD/licensed therapists. He was gifted, had great intuition about where to go next. I could bring my artwork in for discussion. I was amazingly more emotionally healthy after my time with him & more able to live my life. He had great boundaries & helped me to develop boundaries as well.

BUT (don't laugh, ok?)

He had extensive post grad counseling including a masters in counseling...but he is actually a minister. He no longer does full time counseling, but last I know is a chaplain at a large rescue mission. With these hard times he is probably swamped with work there. He did see me during my cancer treatment...He would have seen me more but I felt too ill then.

I have had no contact since then. BTW, I have known where he lives for years...recognized his truck...on a street that I go down often. This was a weird thing for transference back when...But now that I am feeling needy of help again driving by his house is once again bizarro.

love, surfergirl

Surfergirl, I dont think anyone here would even think to laugh about the idea that your therapist is a minister! In fact, I believe there may be others here whose therapists are pastoral counselors or religiously-affiliated in some way. Nothing wrong with that at all. If he's good and works for you, so be it! I have a similar story in that I've seen my current therapist for several periods, the first time when I was 18-19yo. I've had other therapists, but I'm back with her now, and she really is the best I've found for me. I really hope you hear back from him soon.

Hi surfergirl,
No one here would laugh at you about a source of comfort and support!

I hope he is able to call you back soon and that you are able to reconnect.

Thinking of you as you wait,
FMD
