I have been on meds since I was 23 and I honestly dont remember how it feels to NOT be on anything. I know I wouldnt be able to function.I have been told that because of my disorders...I will be on medication probably the rest of my life.

I think most people are "on something." Seriously aren't anti-anxiety/anti-depressants the 4th most prescribed medication in the US?
(birth control being #1)

I have been on meds for 15 years. I wonder what would happen to my brain if I went off? I am on more mental illness medications than hours of sleep per night I get. Crazy...

Boy, going on meds has been quite the relief for me. I resisted it for years and years. But everything is so much easier. Therapy, relationships, work...

Oddly enough, it was a tremendous relief to me to go to my first pdoc appointment. She was so businesslike and thorough. Suddenly I felt like my depression was a straightforward illness to be treated--not a fatal flaw I had to be ashamed about. I know I need the therapy too, of course. But sheesh, these meds make therapy a heck of a lot less horrific.

Sid,
I have taken so many different cocktails in the last 30 months that it boggles the mind... or unboggles it? I was digging through the box of meds looking for some cipro yesterday and came across a graveyard of successful and less-than-successful trials. There's always the $900 worth of geodon capsules, for instance...

The good news is that: although I'm the only one in the house taking psych meds, my cats and husband benefit tremendously. So, that averages one psych med per household member.

*********
I was waiting at the pharmacy for over an hour once (to pick up an antibiotic, of all unlikely things) and I got to overhear the Rx that were being dispensed. One woman came up to the counter requesting her Rx for ativan, the next one for valium, and the man after her for ambien.

So?

Yeah, the meds make therapy more tolerable. I no longer have panic before therapy. but maybe panic was a good thing, because then, once I became more emotionally controlled, I could form an association between therapy=calming down. Now I go in cool as a cucumber and come out all dysregulated. hence, therapy = scary place.

sorry. I go to bed now

wow, that's an interesting movie isn't it?
I wear a labyrinth necklace a lot, guess I like the symbol.
I'll have to see that one, but I am trying to remember the one that you recommended to me from the 70's was it, or the 80's?
I've got to make a list of them
was it the one about the newscaster who reveals the truth about things while he's losing his mind?
If you were to advise me once again regarding suitable movies I will most certainly make a proper list.
Thanks dear Sig,
Sid
P.S.
it's my birthday today :-)
important people in my life keep acknowledging my existence..weird in a way, the concept of it
I forgot to take my effexor this morning and I don't know if it's a tiny bit of withdrawal or the day that's making me a bit sad
...and my concentration has gone to crap, I keep spacing out

I've got quite a bit of abilify just collecting dust...geez what a waste
You've got to love the names they give them.
Abilify...sounds so optimistic doesn't it?
Zoloft....from the depths of despair to "lofty" heights?

and then there are their funny shapes and colors
I like the effexor xr capsules the best...I like to shake it like a tiny little maraca only it has little time released bits in it instead of what maracas generally have inside
and my happy beddy bye little pink seroquels...
so small yet SO sedating

you know I sometimes get a little worried that they'll say the name of the medication out loud. I once had a coworker behind me when the pharmacist mentioned the name of the med I was picking up- effexor, "thanks pharma-guy...thanks"

One time, on the way to a conference, I met this lovely woman and her psychologist husband who were headed toward the same city, but for a different conference.
I met up with them again coincidentally in the airport heading back home. He had gone to some mental health conference of some kind and was toting a "seroquel" branded bag of some kind (courtesy of the conference no doubt).
"Oh, I said, nice bag."
him: "Well..you know what THAT is for don't you?"
me: "yeah" I responded knowingly
the implicit message: "it's for the "crazies" dontcha know?"

goodnight, so sleepy

I think Labyrinth is quite recent, last few years. Made by a Spaniard, and there are lots of fascists (as well as mythology) in it. It's about the period just before 1950 when they were mopping up the leftists.

I like the idea of a labyrinth.....that we are in a maze or a puzzle without sufficient clues or resources and we have to figure out how to get out of it. A lot of myths are about this.

Happy birthday Sid.

Your message caught my eye. No matter my anxiety level, I try not to take anything before therapy. That way I try to go in deal with the anxiety. Otherwise, like you, I feel "cool as a cucumber" and for me I avoid what I need to talk about, or feel it much less intensely.

That's why I have trouble w/ADs too. For me, they blunt emotion, and that's a good thing when I'm in a crisis-feeling situation, but not so good for therapy anymore because I think they hold me back. (my pdoc reduced my AD and I did begin to feel more--the good, the bad and the ugly.

So, you're still hanging on to the means for your suicide plan? Have you let anyone IRL (like h or T) know that's why you keep it? You're feeling so much better now, why continue to keep it around?

Let's see, what might Llurpsie have done if she thought Jammer was in the same situation? Hmmmmm......

If I read this correctly-- ?--

if someone has the means to kill themselves and is threatening to do so, and won't go to the hospital, or take other self-protective action, I would hope a friend who is aware of this would do the right thing.

If you check with your conscience, I suppose the right thing may vary-- but I would hope that would involve doing whatever is possible protect the friend from self-harm.

The drugs that really work, the ones you can't get, the ones you shouldn't take, have no need to advertise themselves with gaudy colours. They are little white pills, instant release. As soon as they made them slow release they started to give them names like those of psych drugs. You can't beat Dilaudid as a name. It has a nice High Church of England feel about it. Must be Archbishop Laud.

An actual threat or a perceived one? Or either? And is keeping a stockpile of medication you no longer use (when it's part of your suicide plan) a threat in and of itself?

Also, should we be responsible for sitting down to look at ourselves and our own triggers PRIOR to jumping on something we merely perceive and using it to justify meddling in another person's life?

And, if I myself had a stash of meds to be used for the same reason, would it be right for me to interfere with what I perceived to be the same sort of thing by another person, or would that be hypocritical? You know, a double standard of sorts......"I'm smart enough to handle this sort of thing, but you clearly aren't."

So many questions......
