Questions to ask a new therapist

Posted by Maxime on February 1, 2008, at 17:39:12

Hi

I will only have a few more session with the therapist at the hospital. I need to find my owo for longterm help (2-3 years). So I have to start calling therapists. Trouble is, I don`t know what questions to ask. Here are some that I have thought of:

1- What type of therapy do they use (CBT etc.)
2- Have they successfully treated anyone with an eating disorder
3- If I am having a crisis do they have number or pager that I can call for help if necessary
4- Do they specialise in treating people with Borderling Personaly Disorder
5- Do they have a payment plan

The question mark key isn`t working on my computer for some reason!

Any thought or addition to this list would be really helpful.

Maxime

Maxi,

ask if you can email them too. I find this very helpful....

When they state the type of therapy they do, ask them why they think it will help with your particular issues. What their goals for you would be? How often they would like to meet? Ideally.
How flexible is their schedule. What happens if you have to cancel an appt. are you charged if you have an emergency? If you give 24 hour notice? rsk

I forgot one more. I need someone who can me deal with abuse and rape issues.

My thought would be: in addition to asking questions (the ones you've listed are all good), be sure to explain what it is you want to do in therapy and hope to achieve with it. And ask him/her if they have experience with what it is you want to do and experience in that room for your ownself too.

Maxie I think you're last question maybe should be number one. Could that have lead to the other disorders? Just a thought. Phillipa

I know it's a few days later, but I just sometime to ponder this thread, based on what I wish *I* had asked--for what it's worth :)

How would you approach a client who was experiencing intense positive or negative transference towards you?

Do you ever consult on cases? How do you decide when to do so?

What do you feel your role or responsibility in a session is? What do you feel is the client's job?

How much do you reveal about your personal life and/or feelings?

If we have a disagreement or an impasse, how would you approach it?

What is your policy about phone calls, email, etc.?

Will we set concrete goals, or do you view therapy as more of an open-ended process?

How long can you commit to? Are you planning major leaves, vacations, etc. in the next year?

How long do most of your clients stay with you? How do you think one knows when therapy has reached an "end"?

How often do you typically need to cancel or reschedule sessions?

I don't know if I'd have the cajones to ask a new T all of these things, but I sure wish I'd known the answers--or even that I'd care about the questions--when I started :)

I'm also remembering a passage from In Session--Lott says it's more important to note *how* a T answers tough questions. Is s/he defensive? Unsure? Secretive?

This is the end of the thread.
