My phobia

Posted by Dinah on February 6, 2008, at 0:31:53

It seems like I can't watch an evening of TV without someone throwing up to differing degrees of graphic-ness. Is this what makes TV cutting edge?

It really makes me tense, since it's not just the obvious shows where I know to hold the remote ready for fast forwarding.

I just don't get it. I haven't thrown up for fifteen plus years. And over twenty before that. How is it that so many characters on so many shows throw up so very often? And is it really necessary to the authenticity of the show to show it so graphically?

I'm going to have to start watching nothing but TV Land reruns. :(

I noticed that there seemed to be a lot of throwing up lately too. Ick. Too many medical shows, I guess.

Just as an indication of how well I've come to know you - I KNEW this was going to be about throwing up. :)

When I'm really stressed, I watch a lot of reruns. I think my system can't take surprises. I finished a book last weekend and the big twist at the end was an incestuous relationship. Didn't see that coming - ruined my whole day.

Hate surprises. Hate them.

I really wish they'd go for a bit less reality in this area. :(

I guess a lot of triggery things come up more often these days. One ER about cutting several years ago really really set me back.

I think I realized, and am surprised I didn't realize it earlier, that the reason I'm so upset right now is the scene in In Treatment. It's bad enough that it's everywhere. And I don't find myself getting acclimated to it at all. But to have it associated with therapy, where I generally feel safe, is really upsetting to me.

That makes sense. Hey - I was shocked that there would be a bathroom connected to his office. I'd NEVER go in there with him sitting there listening. And there doesn't seem to be an entrance off the waiting room, does there? NEVER, NEVER. And of course - my therapist doesn't ever use the bathroom either - so why would they need one in their office?

Too much information...

Dinah,

I radically edit what I watch on tv. I find myself watching the Hallmark Channel, HGTV, Food, Travel, and sometimes a game show.

I like murders that are bloodless and more of a Miss Marple who done it. Movies can be a bit sad, but need to have a redemptive ending. Funny is even better. The less raw images I put in my mind the better.
