How hard is it to see a professional if uninsured?

Posted by Michael83 on January 28, 2008, at 19:48:54

I live in the US and I only have dental insurance.

I might need to see someone. Anxiety and worry is eating me away.

What do I do? Suggestions?

Try your community mental health center. Or your state psychological association, asking if anyone does pro bono or has a sliding scale.

good luck,

Start calling people! A lot of professionals will work on a sliding scale for those who don't have insurance or do but still can't afford the copay. Some do work for free, but that's rarer. Start calling people/agencies (maybe get some suggestions from your general practitioner or online sites like the APA). Ask them if they work on a sliding scale, and what the cost per session is. Any that won't tell you that upfront, don't agree to go to a first session with (some I think have a theoretical orientation that they shouldn't say that upfront, but I disagree). Once you find one you think you can afford, set up a first session and see if you think you can do good work with them. If not, go on to the next person.

Good luck!

If you live near a major university, they often have training clinics where the T's are supervised by licensed T's. They often opperate on a slide fee scale. Even though the T's are in training, you can often get very good treatment.
