anyone ever write down what to talk about with T?

Posted by obsidian on November 13, 2007, at 21:28:59

lately I'm thinking it'd be a good idea....lots of things just slip my mind

I kind of feel like I need an agenda, a therapy "to do" list of sorts

"the hug" - acceptable or unacceptable ?

I was going to say the important thing is that your T knows what you are comfortable with?

But what if you are so conflicted that you are comfortable with nothing?

Anyway, no hugging with my T.

But that was in the 70s and she was a kinda orthodox Winnicottian.

Due to the train times, I end up arriving in my T's neighbourhood 30 minutes before the session, so always have some time to think through things a bit.

Do any of you imagine/daydream conversations with your T? I feel a bit sad to admit this but I find myself doing this a fair bit - although then it's much easier to think what to say (or what I would say) then when actually sitting there with him, and go blank.

I did once make myself a therapy agenda :) but it felt so contrived - I'm meant to speak freely and say whatever 'pops' into my head so the agenda sabotaged that somewhat lol.

I'd say, do whatever suits and works for you best - if a therapy check-list helps keep everything in mind, then why not?

Ditto - no hugs :( - perhaps he might make an exception on the very final session, perhaps.

Seems to not matter what I want to talk about she changes it as I go off on tangents. And I learned to hug when working. Hugs can be healing. Love Phillipa

Good question. Sometimes it's hard to know. Right now I'm wondering if it would be OK to give my pdoc a christmas present. It's something I made, and every time I look at it I think of her. I'm just not sure if it would be appropriate.

not like a list.. but i have this huge pile of letters i have written to him that include stuff like that. All either of us needs to do is refer back to the letters.

if you want an actual list, i don't see a problem with that.. maybe ask him to add to it. Another thought is to put a sentence or two next to each item. Six months from now you might not know exactly what you were getting at. My T told me how he jotted down something cryptic in a file and has yet to figure out what he was trying to make note of, even though he put exclamation points next to it. Just a thought.

When things are swirling around in my mind, I jot down a few words as they come to me. Not a list precisely but a reminder to myself.

I also have a big envelope of issues I've been carrying around forever. However, when I glanced at them the other day I saw that most of them weren't really issues anymore.

I imagine talking with my therapist basically whenever I drive, and I feel like I get as much or more therapeutic benefit from doing that as from actual therapy, having genuine insights, etc.

LOL! I do that too! (nm) » pstrait

I do that too!

My therapist teases me that the therapist in my mind is much better and more satisfying than he is.

Me, too, all the time! I think I'm rehearsing, trying to build up courage, or practice the more sensitive stuff before I try doing it "for real. "And I sometimes relate those imaginary sessions to him, which almost always leads to an important, actual session.

When I mention that I'm about to tell him about one of these "session in my mind," he'll usually smile and say something like, "Was I any good?" or "How did I do this time?"
