Therapy for an eating disorder

Hi

Has anyone here sought therapy for an eating disorder such as anorexia? Was it helpful? How did it help?

Thank you.

I think Racer has a lot of knowledge in this area. She has been writing very informative posts about the multifaceted approach she has taken- which includes therapy, meds and nutritional counselling. She can, of course, speak much better for herself than I can, but I think she has been coping with both anorexia and depression. I have the general impression that she has made tremendous progress over the last two years or so.. You shoud be able to find her posts by looking in the archives here, on the eating board and on the medication board

Thank you.

Yes, I chat with Racer about eating disorders and treatment and she believes I should see a therapist. I agree as well, but I can't afford one.

I was hoping to learn about some positive experiences people had re. therapy and EDs.

Oh, O.K. I hope you find additional people. I do think Racer is a wonderful resource for others with the same thing.

Hi Maxime,
I can't speak from personal experience as far as undergoing therapy for an ED. However, I attended a couple of workshops about DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) for people with eating disorders. The outcomes they reported were promising. I used DBT skills training with a couple of clients with ED's, one with anorexia and one with bulimia. Though in the face of other stress and other "stuff" to talk about, it can be hard to keep a focus on the skills training part when that's what's on the agenda, once mastered, the skills do come in handy if applied outside of therapy.

Just my experience from the other end of the "couch".

Take care,

gg

Maxime

My T is an eating disorders specialist as well as trauma/sexual abuse specialist. He knows now that I used to have an eating disorder, and he talked to me some about when I quit eating recently. I have started that again due to what is going on at home. I did eat one meal today, though. Anyway, his advice to me (because I want to lose some weight and was getting back into dysfunctional ways) was to eat six snacks each day, and I would lose weight. He has a whole program for ED people and a residential component as well. Does your current T know anything about eating disorders??? You really need to be working with someone or with a support group if there is one in your area. Maybe your T would know or could find out.

Even if you can't find a therapist -- and I do suspect there's more out there than you can see, thanks to the depression -- there may be a support group in your area that might be helpful to you. Even if the group itself doesn't perform miracles, someone in the group may know of resources in your community that would help you.

ANAD has local resource people, who maintain lists of options in your area -- things like low cost treatment. It's worth contacting them.

Also, depression/bipolar support groups are other great resources -- again, someone there is likely to know of options you may not have heard of.

Honest to God, Maxime, I promise this is true: a support group saved my life a few years ago. I am not exaggerating. Without that group, I would not be alive to care about you.

I hope there's something helpful here, Maxi.
