New chapter for Therapy Rule Book

Posted by DAisym on August 22, 2007, at 21:01:05

In the therapy rule book we are writing here on Babble, I have another chapter to add.

Things You Should Never Do After A (Hard) Therapy session

1) Go to the grocery store.

-- I went in for kitty litter and laundry detergent. I came out with two kinds of potato chips, two kinds of ice cream, chocolate, oatmeal cookie dough and alcohol. Oh, and the kitty litter and laundry detergent. Not that I've used those. I'm sitting on my deck, drinking, eating chips and ice cream (not together) and ignoring the work piled up.

What else? I'm sure there are more.

Potato chips? I'm *there,* babe!

What kind -- my late beloved liked Ruffles BBQ, so that's what I bought. Then he went through a short period of liking Guacachips -- which are GOOD. Now that he's gone, I have trouble deciding. (Which is why we have far more than a mere two kinds of chips in this place...)

I bought baked Ruffles and baked cheddar ruffles. I ate a bowl of those mixed together. And the ice cream is Choc Moose and cookie dough. And I've baked the oatmeal/raisin cookies. (I didn't taste them yet though, I hope I remembered everything.) And I drank two Smirnoffs, (which is why I hope I remembered everything).

How come I don't feel better yet?

Maybe I need to eat the ice cream instead of look at it. Yup - that's next.

Good rule but a little late. I've been doing exactly that for the last 6 months - that's why I'm up 10 pounds!

Oh, you might add, no stops by Atlanta Bread Company for Mocha Muffins and Cinnamon Oatmeal cookies AND no stops by Marble Slab Creamery.

Therapy is hard.

That should be the title of the book: Therapy Is Hard.

Muffins, cookies and ice cream? I think I've found a kindred spirit. :)

Hmm.. you must have some pretty cool grocery stores where you are - the ones where I live just sell fruit and veg :(

Self-indulgence, albeit guilt-inducing, seems to me the perfect way to sooth the aftermath of a bad session - ok, there might be some lasting effects on weight/health. Perhaps someone should set up a chain of 'grocery stores' conveniently close to therapist clinics - it would be a booming business.

I have another... my (ex!) T once abruptly stopped a difficult session (I was crying) and said 'we have to stop there' and got me out the door, (I couldn't see the clock clearly from where I was sitting, and thought she'd give me a few minutes warning...nope.)

There was a VERY busy and confusing intersection right outside- and I walked right out in front of a car. Babblers, it is only due to that driver's efficient braking skills that I am here today to tell this tale.

so- another Thing You Should Never Do After a (Hard) Therapy session...(especially with arora's ex-T)

2) Attempt to cross the road without assistance.

I call that giving my little girl what it is she wants and needs. For her, it's candy, and usually M&Ms, which I've loved since I was a kid. they give me great comfort. Sometimes I laugh later and say, oh, that's why I needed the candy.

It's self-soothing and very expected after the difficult sessions you've been through lately.
best,
antigua

Don't drive anywhere where you are not totally familiar with the route. Especially for a professional meeting. :(
Yep, therapy is hard.

For years I scheduled an ice cream break after therapy. It was hard when it was a 9AM session and the ice cream stores weren't open yet, but I would camp on their doorstep until they were.

And then I went to the playground and swang (swung? Swinged?)

Don't go on a first date and have a little too much to drink. You might begin pouring out your therapy experience and your feelings for your T, making your date a little weirded out, to say the least :)

I know that after a tough session I make sure to nap before driving. I usually just rest my head on my steering wheel for a five minute nap, but I'll bet it looks strange to others.

Haven't had to do it too much lately though.

I've also been known to decide to have spaghetti and meatsauce when I'm feeling really anxious from a session. That's guaranteed to knock me out for the evening.

I totally agree with the first date thing - only I ended up crying in the bathroom for ~20 minutes.

I would also add don't go back to work after a tough session (unless you want to end up crying in the stairwell like me).

Don't go into a pet store, pet adoption agency or anything pet related. I currently have what I refer to as the "herd".

Also, Don't answer any phone calls from your mother for any reason whatsoever.

I would add- try to avoid a meeting with one's superiors after therapy.

I used to buy a few bars of gourmet chocolate before/after session. The irony being that the depression-anhedonia took away all motivation to eat said chocolate.

The only thing that got me through my chocolate stash was my chocolate buddy on chat- Bobby. Thanks Bobby, you saved many semi-sweet hazelnut organic rainforest bars from getting stale in the fridge.

Hi seldom seen,

There used to be a pet store a few blocks away from my T's office. I went in after a session to buy some crickets for my gecko and came home with crickets and a kitten.

In addition to pet stores and ice cream stores, I need to add incredibly good take out cajun food. Fortunately like the pet store, they moved as the guys who ran the place would have me tell new customers what they should order because I was in there so often on Thursday evenings. Now I have to drive 45 minutes to get to their eat in restaurant so no more bad session gumbo binges. Though it would be worth the drive...

I told my therapist about this thread...

...and he laughed. He said it would probably be very illuminating to many therapists to know how their patients are finding comfort after sessions. I asked him how therapists comfort themselves after long hard days. He said, "we go to therapy." LOL. OK - :)

My son told his therapist today as he was leaving, with me standing there, "it kind of s*cks to be my age. She (gestures at mom) comes home after hard therapy yesterday and drinks. I get to go have a diet Dr. Pepper." We all laughed. And then his therapist suggested cold cookie dough straight out of the wrapper. I knew this guy was good!

Well if it's on the shelf at the store for more than x (I'm not sure what x is, but it exists, in my experience), it gets waaay stale.
