I should have put for me in the title as she wasn't condemning them for everyone. In fact I wondered if she was posting here and didn't want me in her space! But that was just a stray thought. I have a lot of those.

I have trouble limiting the time I spend here. And she was suggesting that I get involved in things in real life.

I have trouble processing all the distress here sometimes. I wonder if it is too much empathy plus alexithymia (learned a new word on Babble :). I just have trouble recognizing that someone is posting and is angry but they are not in some kind of danger that requires immediate intervention. And my anxiety skyrockets. And I can't let go of it.

Thanks everyone for answering.

It happens over and over and over and over but I'm sorry it happened to you. Your anger is absolutely understandable under the circumstances. I'm glad you don't need rescuing.

that he would be overshadowed by the holy spirit

and I believe this has happened.

I know I sound like I'm trying to be silly or am some kind of fanatic or something but I am serious.

I don't think Dr. Bob needs to be prayed for.

People at church pray for me for things like that sometimes. I quit going to church.

I think everyone needs to be prayed for. It may have been a mistake to post about it. It wasn't meant to hurt anyone or to imply that dr hsuing needed prayer any more than anyone else.

> What does overshadowed by the holy spirit mean?

I think to me it means to be full of light and peace and love.

I don't know there are lots of personal associations- the Great Spirit in Native American religions-the verse in the old testament about being comforted like chicks under the mother bird's wings-the christian idea of the spirit being living flowing love-GMhopkins ahhh bright wings-the Buddhist goddess of compassion....

I am aware that the Virgin Mary was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and became pregnant-that wasn't what I was wishing for dr hsuing-trust me..

i was imagining that it must be difficult for him to try to apply his rules consistently when he was seeing the pain first hand as opposed to people he blocks who suffer in silence and i was thinking he must feel trapped in his own rules and wishing him transcendence and peace greater than those rigid rules.

I was IMPROVE ing the moment ala marsha linehan as well psychologically speaking.

Dinah,
I am so sorry you feel hurt by church. I know you used to enjoy going. I think we all need to be prayed/cared for. I'm just not sure we need to know the content of some of those prayers.

I'm trusting God to filter out the ones that might not be helpful to me.

I think anger was secondary to the primary feeling of bereftedness which to me feels different than bereavement. The feelings i have when I empathize are mine not someone else's tho that may first trigger me.

I'm sorry if I was snippy.

It's a sore spot for me.

I think the people at church pray for me because they don't accept me the way I am and want me to change. I'd rather they pray for the patience and compassion to accept me as I am, if they feel an overwhelming need to pray on the topic.

I certainly have prayed for people to have strength when they're having trials, or wisdom when they're facing a hard decision, but those are things they already had, not things I wish they had.

I think it's hard for me to find a faith community. People tend to think I'm a heretic. :(

I've always loved God and worship him in my way. But overall, I think many people here do his will more than the nice lady who gave me the beginners primer on Christianity, however well she intended. Or even the man who was trying to make me feel better by telling me not to pay attention to the others, that he *enjoyed* having me in Sunday School because I livened things up.

I have many bad experiences around established religion so I typically cringe at the notion of people praying for me. But:

That sounds beautiful.

I'll pray for you all.

I'm really glad you did this, and I'm glad you told us, too. Prayer is not solely a religious practise. Nay, I would deem it a spiritual act. One of the purest sorts.

Thanks, zaz.

RIGHT ON.

i think many times people have the wrong impression of praying. it's not a wishing well.
i have had people say they will pray that i 'get better'. FIRST OF ALL, so i may have a mental illness that doesn't mean i'm dying. Secondly, maybe i'm going through this for a reason...my own spiritual growth for example, thirdly i don't believe in praying for direct answers. I would never pray for me to get 'better', but for me to grow in strength to endure it, the knowledge to understand it and the courage to accept it. Thirdly, i belive STRONGLY in God's will. so i don't pray for me to get better or worse but for God's will. that whatever happens is what is right.
not everyone believes this and i respect that, but i believe that everything happens for one reason or another. and i just pray for there to be a purpose.

((((((DINAH)))))) i am SO sorry to hear you've had such a cr@ppy experience. sometimes people can be so wrapped up in themselves even when they THINK they are 'caring' about another.

You are such a good person.

I suppose this will be soon redirected to Faith, but it sounds as if we have similar views on prayer.

It led to some interesting exchanges in Sunday School, I can tell you.
