i am a student at university and i get therapy through the grad school, it's only 20 bucks (sliding scale), but even that was too much, i even told them that in the beginning, and now i have real money troubles, and can only afford (after this upcoming monday) two more sessions. i am going to tell my T, give him notice, and talk about the situation i am sure, it will be painful to leave, especially since my husband just left today (we are seperating, i started it), and i will be alone from now and (have NO friends). so this is a horrible time to stop therapy, especially since we were just going to start working on skillfull thinking and or mindlefulness. i just wanted to get this out, seeing as how i have no one else to say this to.

Oh I'm sooo sorry for you, it is not a great time to leave therapy.

You ought to talk about this with your therapist as your reason for quitting. Perhaps there are exceptions. Or your therapist could refer you to someone who has the freedom to take clients for even less, if they prove financial need.
I'm sorry about the stressors in your life. You're right. That *is* a bad time to lose therapy.

I agree w/ Dinah. Other ideas: if you expect that your $ probs are temporary-ish, perhaps you could pay on some sort of payment schedule. Or you could go to therapy every other week instead of every week (although, I usually discourage meeting that infrequently, it would be better than nothing). Also, some times there are charities that will help subsidize therapy. Something like Catholic Social Services. Your T might have some ideas abt this. Or know where you can call and ask.

Sorry to hear about this, starloree (that's such a cool name!).
Like others have said, do explore whether or not there is a charity that can help with the cost or if your university's program will allow you to go for less or for free. At least you have two more sessions, and that's better than nothing. Take care.

hey! last monday when i had my appt, i told my T about money issues, and he told me to talk to the chic at the desk (he didn't call her a chic, this is me paraphrasing;) ) and tell her about the money issue, because, he said, i shouldn't have to quit therapy because of no money. i told him that i had told the chic before that it was expensive for me, and she didn't seem to care, and so he said that he would talk to her. so i find out how much exactly i have to pay, tomorrow, and it will be retroactive for the past two weeks (cause i haven't paid yet for the last two). so that was kind of comforting, him looking out for me!

Starloree, are you still posting? Have you found help for your money dilema and therapy? I've read that this is a very common problem amongs all of us that need help. There are nonprofit agencys out there that may be able to help. Do you have children? You may qualify for government assistants now that you'll be on your own. I just went to Amazon.com Saturday night and ordered 5 self help books with workbooks to try to help myself since money and therapy are putting me at the brink of bankruptcy. Good luck to you. CEK

yeah i am still here, and as i said above, i worked out the whole money thing with my T. got the price down dramatically! it helped a lot. no i don't have kids, i wish i could get some books too, i really want to get stephen hayes book "get out of your mind and into your life" but i won't be able to get that for a while. but thank you for your concern! it's kind of nice knowing someone was wondering about me CEK! I am with you on the moeny probs for sure! not bankruptcy, but still dirt poor (we don't have credit cards or anything). even though we are seperated and i know i want a divorve, my husband is stillpaying the bills, and i feel extremely guilty about that, so i have been trying like heck to find a job within bike riding distance! no luck. anyways this is getting long sorry.
