Mind chatter

Posted by fairywings on September 26, 2005, at 3:54:44

Anyone else have so much constant mind chatter that they can't get to sleep? I take Ambien every night, and I still can't get to sleep. I was taking 5 mg, now that doesn't work. Sometimes 10 mg does.

I'm wondering what my p-doc would say. He did tell me I could build up a tolerance. I also have some other stuff that keeps me awake, but it's usally the thoughts, nothing bad, just thinking about things. Does everyone do that?

Yep!

I try to do deep breathing or meditation when it keeps me awake. Or I read. Or get up and do a couple of yoga poses.

If that doesn't help, try to tell yourself that you can think about these things in the a.m. You can even schedule a time for it. Or keep a pad and paper by the bed, and write down what's on your mind, sort of like a brain dump.

Good luck

i think of this in two ways. 1)where you are thinking of specific things, work, home, relationships and you just can't stop thinking of them, xanax and ambien usually help me with this. then 2)there is actual 'chatter' where i hear all kinds of letters, words numbers, half sentences all going on in my head almost taking a physical aspect on...zyprexa helps me with this.

yeah sometimes, when I have alot going on. try reading until you fall asleep or watching tv with the sleep timer on. It sounds possible that you built up a tolerance.

My problem is that I go over conversations in my head, conversations I might have! LOL I have both sides of the conversation! People I might talk to, things I might say, what they'll say back, or then I might get into a juicy sex fantasy. Last week I was worried about my appt. and didn't sleep for two nights, that was okay, and then didn't sleep the night I had my appt., I don't know why. Then I didn't sleep last night. That's 4 nights in less than a week. Isn't that losing a lot of sleep?

Some ppl might think I have too much time on my "hands", not really. I run all day with the kids, I'm busy with activities in the evening, try to get some exercise, catch the computer here and there, feed and bathe all the kids, make sure homework is done, then hit the hay. I can't say anything to my p-doc because last time I did he said I was "obsessive", LOL

LOL

I think I may have done that before. Well its hard to do the other side of it but I have gone over things I have to say to people and rehearsed it in a way in my head and when you are on a role its impossible to sleep!

That is alot of sleep, try to take extra ambien just for a night to get you causght up and then reduce it again.
You don't sound like you have too much time on your hands BTW

were you tired when you went to bed? try waiting until the ambien has really knocked you out and then go. I think thta sometimes we go to bed to early and are still coherent enough to start talking to ourselves LOL but if we go to bed when we are barely coherent maybe our minds will make no sense and we will fall asleep to our gibberish. :-) How have you been sleeping?

I thought it was normal to have conversations like that in your head. You know, to think of two sided conversation with my husband and myself, my daughter and myself..... maybe I'm scarier than I thought! LOL It does make you tired, esp. if the conversation is particularly intersting.......

Hi rain!

Gosh I do it ALLLLLLL the time! I carry two sided conversations in my head, you know thinking about what you WANT the other person to say? But it does make it hard to sleep! ; )
I took Xanax last evening, I guess it helped. I'm usually tired when I go to bed. I can't go to bed if I'm not.
thanks,

phillipa it sounds like yours is from past torments? is that right? it's terrible when you just can't shut it off. Do you also have tinnitus, or a high pitched noise in your head/crickets in your ears? It drives me crazy at night. The catastrophizing I do sometimes too, do you do therapy, does it help?

Thanks for your concern. No tinnitus or such. And I can't find a therapist here there aren't any. I know that sounds ridiculous but there is no health care at the beach. What there is is inferior and most people travel to Raleigh NC when they are sick. No psych hospitals either. Just hope we get that house in Charlotte. Even though I 'm scared to death of moving. I know since it's a big city there have to be therapists and hopefully a good pdoc. Have to wait until then. And if we don't get that mortgage, sell condo and our small house I'm doomed. Fondly, Phillipa

Charlotte has LOTS of resources Philippa! You've got UNC Charlotte there too, and they have a huge psychology school.
here's a link to show you how many psychologists there are all over charlotte!

Gee Thanks that was so kind of you. I just hope we get a mortgage and can make the move. I really need theraphy. Even my posts aren't as possitive as they were before. Just more depressed and anxious and crying at times. Can't wait to go to sleep at night and don't to like waking up in the morning. Again thanks so much. Love, Phillipa

I will hope that you get there too. We almost moved there a couple of years ago. Maybe one day I can visit. I would love to see Charlotte, but right not I'm afraid to travel. My family wants a vacation next year - to the nc shore! ; )

That's where I live now near Emerald Isle. The first year was okay. But it's really just a vacation spot. Reality sets in that's there is nothing to do and then you don't even want to go to the beach. Fondly, Phillipa
