What is this?

Posted by Angela2 on September 24, 2005, at 11:41:18

I am wondering if I am experiencing dereralization sometimes at places like work and group things like parties. But I'm not sure. Here are my symptoms: I don't feel comfortable talking to other people at work. When someone approaches me, I am afraid they are either going to talk to me or say something rude. I feel like I am in a bubble world. I have difficulty using the problem solving part of my brain. When people are talking, it's difficult for me to jump in because I don't really grasp what they are talking about. Or maybe it just feels like, since they aren't talking to me, I don't want to interrupt. I think that's more the case than the latter. Becuase when someone is just talking to me, I pretty much understand what they are talking about and can respond appropriately. I just notice how quiet I am at work. And I seem to do my job, but I'm not talking to everyone like other people are. Maybe my brain just functions differently. Maybe that's OK. I plan to tlak about this with my t.

I agree with racer. Are you are afraid of how they will react to you? In situations where the topic of conversation is something that I don't know a lot about or understand I will often stay more quiet or try to change the topic if appropriate. Maybe at work one day you could start talking about something that you are really interested in and know alot about and see where it goes.

Thanks guys. It probably is partly anxiety. I feel like my brain just doesn't work like theirs does so it's hard for me to jump in a talk. Does that mkae sense?

Yeah it does. I feel like my brain isn't working 'normally' when I get really overwhelmed. But I think that anxiety/stress etc can cause your brain to shut down and stop working 'normally'. Once you are at that point your brain isnt working like the average calm persons.
