Yes, I certainly think so, although they may well be related.

My understanding of tranference is that it is when you feel a specific emotion toward your therapist, say love or lust, that you are really feeling toward someone else (or have felt toward someone else in the past). The feelings get "tranfered" over to the therapist. Countertranference is when the therapist feels feeings toward you, the client, that are really about someone else.

I fell in love with my ex-T, but he didn't believe so much in transference--he said that we can't help who we are attracted to, and that we were similar in age and interests, etc. My point is, we talked about transference and this is the definition he gave me.

Hope this was not confusing, and helps your understanding!

Wow what a really good question. All I can say is that I do become attached to some female therapists, but not all. It does not happen with the 2 p-docs I have had ( one male and one female) and they did and do therapy too. I liked both p-docs but no bizzare atachments occured. I was so attracted to 3 Ts including my present one. One of them and I knew each other before therapy and we remained friends. We decided after a year that it wasn't such a good idea to have therapy sessions. We go out to eat and talk on the phone. I was physically attracted to her but she was not attracted to me.

I have been unusually cruel to the other 2. One threw me out of her practice. I am waiting for the current one to do the same. terrics
