Car accident

Posted by Jazzed on June 12, 2005, at 17:21:56

I am so freaked out, and feeling a little sick and depresssed. My sons and I were coming home from the park, and on the way, a van was broken down on the road. There were 4 or 5 cars basically stopped, waiting to go around him. When I looked in my rear view mirror, a car was flying up behind us, and I realized there was no way he was going to be able to stop. I said to the boys, "oh my God, he's going to his us!" Right after that the car flew up on the curb, hit a light pole, and continued to go until it hit another pole. Right after it hit the light pole, I could see the light pole coming down, and thought to myself that it was going to hit us, so I had to move. As I moved, the top part, the light portion of the pole, came falling down, and I had to move to avoid that. When I pulled out of the way, I got out of the van, got my kids out, and went back and started cussing the guy out. Several people came over to me, and told me he was really drunk. It's a miracle no one was hurt, and if he'd hit us, I can't imagine any way we would've survived because he came to a stop, when hitting the pole, which was 5 cars up, by the van that was stalled. OMGosh! I can't stop the visions of all of this from going through my head! I'm glad I have sleeping pills for tonight. I hope I can get over this quickly. Any ideas?

Hi Jazzed,

The most important thing is that you and your sons weren't hurt. When those flashbacks start happening, change them from the accident to how you handled the accident. Concentrate on when you moved the car out of harms way. Tell yourself that *We are all okay. I didn't panic, I moved the car.*

If you start blaming yourself for being there, try to change your thoughts over to it was not your fault in anyway.

I hope you slept peacefully. Your boys are lucky to have a mom who keeps a cool head and knows how to drive defensively. You are all okay, you did a great job, remember that.

Jazzed,

Sounds like you did a great job. It is no concidence that you and your children are okay, do you believe that God was taking care of you? I believe that to be true. I'm so glad you're okay. You did all the right things under a lot of pressure.

I think it's normal to feel shaken up for a few days...when I got rear ended I was paranoid for a month about people coming up very fast behind me. Of course, it may be a good idea to discuss this with your T.

I hope that drunk *sshole got nabbed by the police. Were they on the scene? He should have his license taken away before he DOES kill someone.

You did a wonderful job in split second decision making. You helped your boys stay safe. It was an awful experience, but I hope you came away with some confidence in yourself.

I'm so glad you and yours are safe.

And I hope the drunk driver gets a chance to exercise his legs for a good long while.

Yikes! That was scary. Well I think it's helpful to keep talking about it. It was pretty terrifying after all, and thus pretty hard to assimilate with all the other everyday experiences in your life. That was life threatening (potentially), and I'm glad you and your kids weren't hurt.
Maybe you could write about it, in each of its parts. Like the holy crap, is this really happening part, then the 'my goodness it is part', and so on.
I did this with art in a way. Drawing stages within a traumatic experience. It got a lot of emotion out I didn't even realize I had. I don't know if I made any sense just now, but I hope you'll be alright. Take care.

Thanks for all of the support poet, messadivoce,
happyflower, pinkeye, Dinah, and sleepygirl.
You all had great suggestions, and I really appreciate the support more than anything. Just the thought of losing my boys (and my own life) makes me so sad/angry, but I am VERY thankful, and YES, absolutely, I do believe that God was watching out for us.

When I was 17 I was the passenger in a car that was forced off the road by a drunk driver. Our car went over and embankment, rolled 3 times, and then I was thrown from the windshield of the car. When I was 18 (I think, maybe 19) I was in a small sports car, and was hit by an 18 wheeler. Those visuals sometimes come out to haunt me, but this seems worse because my boys were in the car.

Oh, I forgot, there was also the time I made the HUGE mistake of giving a Hell's Angel type dude the finger as he passed me, and he tried to "off" me by positioning my car between his vehicle and an 18 wheeler. My bad! Never do THAT again! LOL

I think I'll ask my p-doc about someone who does EMDR on Tues. AND, as long as it's not the last guy I saw, we'll give it a try. LOL Gotta keep laughing, gotta keep my mind off of it.

Thanks again y'all!
Jazzy

Jazzed,
I'm glad you & the kids are OK! You did great to steer the car to safety. You should be proud that you saved your family. You did good!

I absolutely hate drunk drivers. Hate them.
I'm glad you're OK! I think it's normal to be keyed up, anxious after such an event. You may have delayed reactions, too. Definitely talk to your doctor if you need to, and be gentle to yourself.

take care!

Thanks JenStar,

I feel better today. Last night I didn't think I'd exercise today, but got up first thing and did my swimming and then biking, and now I feel like I can meet the day. Think I will talk to the doc though, if I didn't need a T before, I could sure use one now! LOL

Ack! So glad you weren't hit! (((Jazzed))) (nm)

What a horrible experience. I've had a couple of near misses and it's always really stressful.

I'm so glad none of you guys were hurt.

Jazzed, You have been blessed by the gods or whatever higher power there may be. Try to focus on your good fortune. And your kids too. Car accidents are a modern hell. Drunks seem never to get hurt, only they kill others, maim lives, etc. Make it a point to celebrate rather than be depressed. And drive carefully. You are a lucky one. I'm also one who's been spared and I thank god because I used to drive as if I were god. i was that drunk, I was that killer, and by the grace of god, I learned a valuable lesson. I'm dangerous and I have to realize that my car is not a weapon. Thanks for your reminder. Each time I get behind the wheel I have to remind myself that I'm not involved in Nascar. Cockeyed.

How scary! I'm glad you were able to avoid it. I hate that helpless feeling of impending doom. And I don't blame you a bit for cussing out the driver (no surprise there!).

I hope that the images have waned a bit. Do talk about it if it helps. Take extra gentle care.
